Fabia -00 1.4 MPI loses power on highway (misfiring?)

Featured Replies

My daughters Fabia 1.4 MPI frequently loose more or less of the engine power when running at constant speed on i.e. a hiway. To regain power, it can help to release the accelerator partly or fully and then pressing it again.

Also, the fuel consumption is on the high side.

At the garage, while doing other jrepairs, they said the diagnostics reported misfiring of two cylinders, 2 and 4 I think it was.

Could anyone out there give me solid clues what to look for. Unfortunately it seems impossible to get professional analysis and repairs done nowadays without actually having the troubleshhoting 100% done before handing the car to the garage, otherwise they tend to replace the whole car randomly without any guaranteed result. But you have to pay....

-----------------------

The car is now 50000 miles, and the following have had to be replaced:

- Front wheel bearings

- Servo feedback sensor system (new version needed old is crap - you pay)

- Exhaust piping (now that may be excused)

- Break pedal switch (new version needed old is crap - you pay)

- Engine Thermostat housing (new version needed old is crap - you pay)

- Rear breaks jam completely - car can not be moved but be lifted away at 4 weeks of standstill. Workshop to get it rolling again...this is absolutely unacceptable - but you pay...

- Engine tepmerature sensor

- Lambda sensor

I have had 15 different cars during 40 years, and I have never ever been in contact with such a heap of junk as this Fabia...the only good thing to say is that it at least seems to be fairly well preparied against rusting away. (Might it be the strategy: Make em last long and require wagonloads of expensive replacement parts?)

Girlfriends last fabia (the one she rolled) had similar problems, engine stuttering at high power output such as dual carriageway driving. Replaced the Coil pack and that solved that problem, then we realised the Lambda sensor was dead, so we replaced that too. Your problem sounds like the coil pack as it contains 2 coils to run 4 cylinders, if one coil goes then you lose 2 cylinders.

If the car misfires for too long then you can wreck the lambda sensor in minutes, if the lambda sensor is dead and the car continues to run with a misfire then you can almost guarantee the catalyser will melt. Thats a very expensive part to replace too.

Hope this helps.

Dave.

Please please please stop scaring me with these threads... i have a 1.4 Mpi at 55,000 nothing wrong with it but these threads make me worry... and it's got a remap stuck on it!

The coil pack seems like a safe bet and that's not too expensive, yes it is a bit pricey but could be worse. Hope the heap 'o' junk turns into a heap 'o' funk soon! lol.

I'd agree, this sounds like a double-ended coilpack going down.

Wouldn't worry - nothing's gone on SWMBO's MPi that couldn't be fixed on the drive (just follow the trail of How-Tos! ;):D )

Great many thanks, coil exchange it will be.

To the guy with the 55000 m: Sell it faster than .... while it not yet have been falling apart on you.

We have a W reg with just under 50k on with no major problems. Both fronts springs have snapped & been replaced (which im sure is the wife not slowing for speedbumps!) and the most recent thing was the clutch pedal box section snapped. Inconvenient but nothing worse than expected for its age and the way it is treat by the wife.

I believe before we got it it had a good bit of work with the heaters and aircon but not sure exactly. Temp gague takes ages to heat up in the winter but that gets sorted by blanking off half of the front grille with plastic & allowing less cold air onto the radiator.

Hope you get the car sorted.

Duggie - Remap? on a 1.4 MPI? Really? surely your having us on!

Edited by Redfab

No... I took it to Jabba for a custom remap, got an 11% gain on the 68 Bhp up to about 75-76 Bhp, Throttle response is improved and the engine feels just genuinely smoother and more healthy... touch wood.

i have the power graph if your interested.

Duggie - sure just out of interest - could you send it as PM. Also interested in cost if you dont mind. I have always told the wife it cannot be done. Doubt I will go for it but amazed it can be done!
