Slow front wipers.

Featured Replies

Ok wipers wipe fine at fastest setting, any other setting is a lottery, sometimes working somtimes stopping mostly going slow.

Motor has been changed for a new one, linkage has been replaced and so has the relay.

Any suggestions?

Do they wipe at the fast speed when on fast? That does sound very much like a linkage issue - even though you have "replaced" the linkage - was that with a new linkage, or a second hand one from somewhere?

Otherwise maybe an earthing issue? Are you getting a good 12v supply to the motor?

wipers are fast when on the fast setting as though there was nothing wrong. I took the old linkage off took it to pieces and cleaned it up so it was very smooth but the same thing happened so I bought brand new replacement from Skoda.

Not tested the voltage. Do you know which pin is supposed to be what voltage? Not got a Haynes yet.

Thanks.

Yes, measure the voltage when it's on going into the plug. If below 12v, feed 12v into it and if so you have a supply voltage problem. If you are geting 12v, feed an earth into the earth wire to isolate an earth fault.

Generally this fault is the wiper stalks siezing in the alloy mech bushes. But if you had a new mech and you can turn it easily with the motor disconnected, it's not that.

could it be the wiper stalk in the steering column is not contacting properly and the wipers are getting funny signals to turn on and then off very fast (a new stalk or one from another car is cheap and quick test, so might be worth trying it)?

/\ That's an odd suggestion, but it does fit the facts posted so far.

:confused:Any signs of melting around the electrical connections ? either the relay or motor with a bad connection.

A faulty Wash/Wipe relay can also cause this problem. Try removing the relay and then putting it back. If the contacts are dirty/oxidised, this often fixes the problem.
