Steering

Featured Replies

I've noticed an unusual noise in the new Roomster. It happens between 3/4 and full lock (left or right). The noise resembles scraping cardboard along a road surface. It is related to speed - as you slow down, the scraping 'slows down'. It originates from both sides simultaneously. I think it only happens in the wet - yet to confirm.

Anyone notice this before? Maybe it's something to do with the ABS or electro-hydraulic mechanism? Maybe it's 'standard'?

Many thanks.

When the hydraulic pump is overloaded (left or right full lock) the pump make funny sounds. I`be been said that is normal. If still worried, take a visit at your dealer. btw, in the manual is said that you should not keep the steering wheel in full lock position longer than 10-20 seconds in order to prevent any damage to the power steering system. Best wishes!

No - it's not the usual noise which emanates from a power steering pump under excessive load. Anyway... an update for all, as of 19th November 2008:

The dealer has today confirmed all of the reported faults as follows:

(1) scraping noise at low speed under 1/2-full lock, slowing down to a 'ticking' until vehicle comes to rest - this occurs in the wet only - as yet undiagnosed

(2) excessive knocking from nearside front primarily (but also off-side front) when the vehicle is cold - dealer suspects faulty steering rack and has filed a technical report to Skoda (they have had several similar faults with Fabias as well (same front steering/suspension) - they have replaced steering racks on Fabias and the problem persists) - awaiting response from Skoda

(3) a light 'thunk' from the steering when turned left or right, only after the vehicle has been standing for a while - attributed to the power steering pump, but yet to be confirmed - awaiting a response

Any other reports of similar problems would be greatefully received via this forum.

Following this thread with interest as I also have strange noises coming from the steering system/front wheels when hard turning (exacerbated in the wet).

Mentioned it to dealer at 1st service. Of course, the noise didn't happen then.

I have not noticed any but the slightest noise, but I understand the steering is electro-hydraulic.

When at a standstill with the engine just at idle I notice a slight dimming of the dash lights (at night )when I turn the steering even just a fraction. This will be due to obviously fairly powerful electric motor cutting in. It would seem logical that the motor and pump are going to make some noise. But that dosent answer the question of why it may be sometimes louder.
