Variable frequency wipers

Featured Replies

Hi all,

sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere, but what drives wipers frequency/speed in my Octy given that I have no autowipers?

TIA

Um... not sure I understand your question. There's a sliding switch on the top of the wiper stalk which you can use to change the frequency of the intermittent wipe.

The 4(?) position switch on top of the stalk. Slide to the left for slow, right for faster.

Ok,

I'm aware of the stalk. Let's describe it better: yesterday evening I was driving on the highway, it was raining and stalk position was fixed (just under max frequency): as I gained speed the wipers started moving "faster" - and I can assure I was not drunk :)

Thing is my Octy has not auto wipers, or better I didn't pay for them. Infact they don't start wiping by themselves, but they seem automatically changing the wiping freq. I wonder: based on speed? or do they feel rain drops? In this latter case, where should be the rain drop sensor be located?

The rain sensor (if present) is in a little box attached to the screen behind the rearview mirror.

I think there is a speed-related function, which is more likely the cause fo your wiper variability.

If you have the wipers on, when you stop they change to intermittent. The speed of the intermittent wipe also changes when you (think it halves in speed).

Haven't noticed that it changes when driving at speed, only when coming to a stop.

Ok thank you all,

I have not noticed any box attached to the mirror, but I still have a small "nipple" in the middle of the dash, quite near the lower part of front windscreen. The thing is made of a black disturbing reflective plastic. What is it for?

Its an Infra-Red sensor for something. Can't remember what for. Might be temperature or sunlight or something... (someone will be along with a better answer in a minute).

Thank you Sammycarp,

so my idea to paint it with a matt varnish might be a bad one ... :)

The center dash nipple is an IR sensor for the climate control.

The wipers gain speed as you drive faster and switch to intermittent when you stop with them in the continuous wipe setting. It's a speed dependant function, like GALA on the stereo.

Ok, great.

Do you mean this behind the storage space on the dashboard .

I'm wondering of it's purpose too .

Yes, but I have a sort of on top of it, and it shines under the sun and reflects on the windscreen.

The car in the picture has Climatic, that's just a place holder there.

That's normal. When speed exceeds 120km/h the wipers start to move faster. Also if you have the wipers on constant speed and you come to a complete stop the wipers go to intermittent wiping.

Doesn't need rain sensor for that.
