I find myself being fascinated with them a bit recently.. dont ask me why

I'm only 20 so I would never get insured on one for a decent price, but its not something I'd rule out in the future.

What power do they produce? What would be their potential reliable max power output?

How do they handle?

What would MPG be like?

What does everyone else think of them?

Good Q car IMO.

I was interested in one of these a while ago so did a bit of research.

IMHO, the performance doesn't justify the fuel consumption... or even come close.

Manuals are rare and the autos seem to get bad reviews.

It won't handle like a sports car, it's a powerful cruiser rather than a back road blaster.

In short, I like them... I would have one if I could afford to put the petrol in, but, they don't make any sense IMHO.

A great lazy motorway cruiser IMO. Not something I'd consider modifying at all though.

For the engine size and cylinder count it doesn't have a high output at all, but that's sort of in the spirit of things really.

I've seen them about the Classifieds and agree, there's something about them :) Would I ever go so far as to buy one? No.

He says he wants 5k!!

I would have thought that a little ambitious in the current climate.

Nice cars, will be thirsty, best described as "effortless". The only real problem is the price people seem to think they are worth - probably should be halved:rofl: Oh and some have very naff beige interiors - I know coz I drove one

They are very good cruisers, feel fairly sure footed around corners but doesn't really invite you to throw it around corners. It isn't as fast as you might think they don't feel any quicker than a remapped vRS MKII although having the 4motion system using a torsen differential means you can launch off the lights pretty quick. Most parts are pretty cheap because it's just a Passat but servicing it will be problematic, most garages won't know what to do with that W8 engine if anything went wrong.

MPG will depend on how/where you drive it, it's designed as a cruiser and if you drive on motorways all the time at sensible speeds you should see 30mpg but if you hoon it around town your going to get 18-22mpg as an average.

I wouldn't worry about insurance too much, it won't be terrible. I'm only 21 and have had quite a few big busses like 4.2 A8, S500, Grand Cherokee and Volvo S80 T6 to name a few and insurance has been fine. Confused.com is your friend.

Overall I'd say they are pretty cool but you'd be happier with an S6 Avant if you want a fastish Q-estate car.

I'd have one for the noise alone :)

Money pit, these sort of cars are best owned under warranty tbh.

the golf V6 4 motion is a second quicker to 60 and far cheaper to buy and run :)

It probably won't return much more than 20mpg!

Good shout. And probably just as comfortable on a long cruise as well. While sounding pretty nice too :)

Just wait 12 months and you'll be able to get an R36 for the same money!

W8 Passats are nice because they're a bit different. Plus, hardly anyone knows they exist (or can tell when they are seen as the differences are tiny over a normal Passat, little W8 badges in the grill and quad exhausts IIRC). However, they do make a very nice noise and are pretty swift. I suspect they'll be considerably cheaper on insurance than an R36 / R32 or something like an S6 Avant, simple because the humble Passat W8 has probably not found it's way to many go-faster buyers.

Not drven one but heard one accelerating away and it sounded the business. Nice if you like Q Cars and can afford the fuel bills:)
