Checking water pump?

Hi Guys

Just lately I noticed a noise which increased in tempo allong with engine speed. Only noticable when outside the car, Im worried it could be the water pump. Sounds a little like a washing machine (not on full spin).

Is there some way of checking the water pump by feeling the temp of the hoses when the engine is running?

I had the cam belt changed about 6 months ago at main stealer but they didnt advise changing the water pump; I have since read on briskoda that it is recommended!
