Speedo now seriously bonkers

Featured Replies

Hey folks, whats in the title really, whenever in idle at a standstill the needle jumps from 0 to 50 or thereabouts, has started happening a lot recently, not all of the time though. I take it that this is the speed sensor going mad really, how easy is it to get to and clean, or how much is a new one fitted?

opinions/thoughts please, thanks.

-Duggie.

Road speed sensor is located on the top rear of the of the transmission casing. It's hall effect so cleaning won't help. Check wiring/plug/socket for corrosion before replacing sensor.

Hall effect?

Hall effect?

Hall effect is either magnetic or optical. Basically it means an electronic sensor rather than one that rotates like a potentiometer. Magnetic Hall relies on a magnet passing it every rotation, and optical using infra red beam of light, usually with a reflective dot on the component being measured for rotational speed. All very Star Trek :D
