Castrol Edge 5W-30 synthetic

Featured Replies

Anyone got good/bad things to say about the stuff?

Alarmingly checked oil earlier and was low, so bought 4 litres of it from Halfords.

Please tell me nice things about it....

Best stuff you can get imo, but be warned as the TFSI is renowned for it's thirst for black gold!

Only fill to the middle of the level zone and you won't burn so much.

Cheers guys, thanks for the tips.

With the price it was, glad to hear it is the best you can get ;-)

Noticed mine was low the other day. Is it on offer at Halfords or do you know something we don't??

I've been thinking about taking your advice but I'm afraid that my cam-follower won't be properly lubricated.Anyway,in this part of the EU,Mobil I Formula ESP 5W30 seems to be the oil that reduces oil consumption more effectively.:):):)

I use the Longlife edge too. But by jaysus it likes to consume it. I have done 10k since my last change and it has gone down to minimun twice. Good thing i like about this oil it has PD technology that was designed for high pressure cams so might be good for the fuel pump cam issue on the TFSI.

Why would any part of the engine be any less lubricated by keeping the level between the minimum and maximum levels?

I found by running mine at max all of the time it burnt the oil until it found a level around half way so I started to maintain it at halfway and it burnt much less.

Hmmm but shouldn't it stay around the middle way once it dropped from the full level though?

Yes that's what I said, I found that topping up above the middle simply resulted in it being burnt off more quickly.

I found mine going to the min mark as quick as it went to the middle mark though.

hmm, certainly not what I experienced in either of my Octy's.

Having said that my engine is new. Funny thing was the first 10k with factory oil (what ever it was) used feck all but when i changed it to the edge i got this phenomena . What does come out of the factory, Helix?

I don't really know what to say. However,it does say to always keep the oil topped up in the owners manual.:):):)

It depends on your interpretation of the term keep topped up. Keep topped up would mean to me not to allow it to go below the minimum. There is a minimum and maximum level for a reason and this should be considered a running level.

Aye but the engine did not come out of the factory with that amazing engine spec!! Don't blame it for using more than a drop of oil. I would not grudge the car a more frequent engine oil check and top it up with the best. A small investment after the cash you have spent on mods.

I agree with VRStu that for some reason the dipstick rarely stays around the "max" mark but it hangs around the mid mark for longer.

Was not on offer, though I discovered it by chance.

Halfords had a "deal" on normal Castrol 5W-30 fully synthetic. One can of the edge was sitting in amongst it, someone must have ditched it for the cheaper/normal stuff on offer.

Mine just seems to always want to go to minimum. It seems to be worse with the Castrol edge. Someone mentioned something to me that a mate of theirs (who is a mechanic) said he wouldn't use it because it burns off quicker (must be something to do with whats in it that gives it the "Edge":rofl: ), could this be the reason for the high usage?

So i'm not the only one with this problem? Mine has been doing it since i have used the edge. If the oil was 5W 40W it might be better.

Well bearing in mind halfords have 20% off mobil1 esp 5w30 i'd give that a go myself bearing in mind the information given above.

It's not a matter of interpretation Stu.It clearly states that the oil level should always be at the ''max'' point.:):):)

How many miles do you have to put on any of the PD units before they stop using oil???

My old superb never used any but my Octy drinks a liter evey 10K

My interpretation would be that it has to be above min, otherwise min would equal max :)

Even at min theres bound to be a certain safety margin anyway...like everything else.

I'm with VRStu, i had the same experience with the old Peugeot XUD engine. Fill it to 'full' went to middle range very quickly, then never seemed to hit the bottom of the range. I seem to be seeing the same with my 1.9.

1L over 10k miles is nothing to really worry about. I'd say around first service time the TDI's drink a bit less and around 40k the oil use is more minimal, however you will always get some on any engine.

Old cars (when newish) used go from somewhere near max to somewhere between half and minimum over a 5k or 6k service interval. Nobody ever noticed however because it was service time so the old oil came out and you got filled up to max with new oil.

Can't say I ever noticed this on the XUD's, but then as I stated above i don't think they ever used enough between services to warrant topping up rather than just waiting for the oil change.
