water damage to electrics

Featured Replies

hello,

I think I have a well-recognised problem on this forum - water leaking in under the pollen filter, causing damage to the electrics in the left door.

The Superb I have is out of warranty - having called Skoda customer services they tell me that they might offer a contribution to the repair, depending in part on my customer loyalty profile.

Anyway have an idea what sort of charge this work will come to, and what in practice skoda might chip in?

thanks!

No idea on costs I'm afraid, but would be very interested in hearing the outcome and how SUK assess "customer loyalty profile". How long out of warranty is it?

cheers

Last one I did ended up over a grand.

Some have been more, some less, depends on what has caused it. The pollen filter on its own shouldnt really leak. the scuttle trim and water deflector should handle the water. What happens is the plenum drains block and water sits around the bulkhead area, thee seals are not meant for that, just water passing by. I have had the plenums fill up to the point that water enters the brake servo and rots out the back of the master cylinder.

That's nice of them... although I agree in the wondering about the "customer loyalty profile".

Still, there's a thread or two kicking around here at the moment with a full VW tech bullitin on how to fix the problem yourself - it's a very easy fix.

The electronics however could be a more expensive fix - and hence why Lummox's last job ended up in four figures.

Roto's well versed on the actual parts that tend to get damaged - but the only ones I can remember off the top of my head are the soldered "nodes" under the carpet... they tend to corrode quite badly.

What electric damage specifically has happened?

thanks for the replies

the car is well out of warranty (2002 reg) and in any case second hand. The rep I spoke to indicated that they would look at a contribution request either submitted individually or through a dealership. In the latter case if you had a full service history, esp. at the same dealership, this would help. In my case I have actively avoided dealerships!

The symptoms are - interior lights are out (the ones next to the rear view mirror), as well as footwell and any door lights.

as a footnote, the lights went out about the same time that my old mechanic (I now moved house) disconnected faulty rear parking sensors. I have tried to replace/change the fuse for the sensors to see if that might be the problem but couldn't work that out even with the help of the fuse box diagram...duhhh

HI

i have exactly the same problem with my suberb 2.0tdi.reg. 07. when i opened door:smoke from left mirror, all interior lights are out, remote control not working(Lack of reaction ). tomorrow im going to service.

If you've avoided dealerships, you're going to have a hard time as one of the service items it to check and clean the drains if required.

Hmm, something's shorted out. Sounds to me like a little trial & error is involved and I agree with Cheezemonkhai in the sense that if you've no Skoda FSH they might not consider anything.

Still, it's always worth a shot they can only say no.

In terms of a fix I'd look at the wiring under the n/s/f footwell, particular this "node" I spoke of (forum search will reveal Rotodiesel talking about in detail) and the black "box of tricks" under the carpet.

Good luck

VW looks at Main Dealer servicing as Customer Loyalty - so I would think SUK will be the same?

But as previously said - nothing ventured/nothing gained.
