future VRS Tdi owner - few questions - sorry!

Featured Replies

Hi im new here so take it easy on me :). was tipped off by a customer who told me to join :P

I want to buy a octavia VRS TDi in the summer (once i have enough no-claims n lots of money). Im just confused on which colour to choose?

Race blue? yellow? also is white available? - never seen one?

which ones are really easy to keep clean?

also what power gains can i expect from a remap n few mods?

sorry if the questions been asked before

thanks ricky :D

Yes white is available, also a gunmetal grey now. Black will be the hardest to keep clean, and I find my blue one quite easy to keep clean, and not showing the dirt much.

A remap is likely to get you somewhere arund 195 bhp on a pd engine. Not sure what difference a remap would be on the cr engine, as if you want a new one it will have the cr engine.

Hi Ricky, if you use the search facility you will find loads of information on here, but be warned you will spend lots of time looking, lots of piccys, and it's addictive :D

WELCOME.

Colours - no car is easy to keep clean; I guess you mean 'which car shows the dirt least?' I would suggest in order of showing the dirt most/first you go;- Yellow, White & Black, Race Blue, Grey, Red, Silver. the all look good when clean.

Remap - No-one has yet got a remap released for the DR engine, but Superchips are known to be working on one. Results from the 170PD engine are proven at around 200bhp (and a bit more) although I happen to have 210bhp. The limiting factor on this engine is the longevity of the Diesel Particulate Filter and the frequency with which it would regenerate. Without it (the DPF) we would all be buzzing around with, probably, 220 bhp.

Over and above this; settle down in a comfy chair and do a search; you'll spend hours reading through loads of good info. Good luck.

Having owned 2 yellow ones, 1 Race Blue and 1 Black one and being slighlty obessed about keeping them clean I can safely say they all show the dirt when dirty!! I think you should look at it from a slightly different way....What looks best clean!

Out of the three colours I had, I prefer Yellow based on the fact that it doesn't show stone chips and swirl marks so badly and you are never going to lose it in a car park

Just to mention; Race Blue is the most popular colour, followed by Black.

Yellow? only a few souls brave enough to order one; there are a handful in the Country.

White and Grey are probably the 'in' colours at present.

That's good, I've just ordered a new white one!

Top Man; converted to CR TDI?

Indeed, fancied a change and the lower running costs are a bonus!

blue will be easiler to find; yellow rare as hen's teeth.

Yes, Common Rail. Came out this summer, essentially in MY2009 vRS. Prior to this was PD engine (Pump Duese)

which diesel engines were in MY 05/06 cars?

Only 1.9TD 105 and 2.0L TDI 140PD. The PD170 engine in the vRS was not released until autumn 2006; in MY2007 cars.

If I was buying secondhand I would be looking at engine, trim level, gbox, ,maintenance, remaining warranty and what it drives like well before colour.

As far as which colour "shows the dirt least", I would say it depends on what colour your most common dirt is (seriously). Where I am it doesn't rain that often, so we often get muddy rain (dust in the air gets pulled down with the rain), so the best colour would be a light to mid brown (my yellow one is the best of the colours available in Oz).

Here's a pic of a white one.

Think I could live with a yellow one, but swmbo over ruled and I went blue. There was a yellow for sale at my local dealer but I heard it was a lemon, had new engine and suspension fitted within 6 months.

Yellow is by far the best colour.

(Points OP at my Sig :D)

I think Race Blue takes some beating ...

Black is probably the best colour, moat cars I've seen look good in it, but is a nightmare if you like to keep your car clean.

i saw a yellow one today parked in tesco car park n it looked as if the colour had faded. bright yellow would have been a nice colour not custard :S for some strange reason it looked good but still found it unusual :S i think it will grow on me.

im looking at a hatchback as i dont need a estate.

was there any recalls done on the VRS TDi's? or any common problems that should have been solved/need to solved?

any owners had any trouble with them?

Running cost must be low on these? as its a diesel.

sorry for asking all these questions. the first most newest car im buying and its my third car :)

thanks

ricky

DPF pressure sensor and reflash is one recall i know of.

Was the yellow one definately a Mk 2 Octy. A good search will find such things as the Dual Mass Flywheel, and the DPF. The flywheel issues only really effected the first builds IIRC but worth checking. The Diesel Particulate Filter issue can result in the car going into limp mode if it isn't purged properly. Most instances of this come from lots of town driving which clog the filter up. To solve it give the car a good blast or 10 min motorway run. A search will find more details.

Other things I would check are the front windscreen for any delamination which should be replaced under warranty. Also check if the exhaust pressure sensor, as some have been replaced and the latest software is installed. Both warranty jobs and not big issues.

So is this gunmetal grey different to the anthracite grey that's currently available? If so, anyone got any pics or swatches to show the difference? I was about to get my L&K in AG before I went to another dealer to see in the flesh a car with sunset windows and sunroof so I could see if I wanted them. SWMBO and I saw the car and said, yes, it has to be the colour we were looking at........ black!

I swore I wouldn't get one as I know how quickly dirt shows up compared to the sensible grey I could've had, but everything about it just screamed it was the right colour to have, and we all know how devastating it looks when it is clean! The only other colours I would have got were Race Blue, not available on the L&K, and Nightfire Blue which is even better, but only available on the Superb. DAMN YOU SKODA!!!!

Sorry i think I posted the wrong colour name, my apologies.

Just had a quick look on the skoda website and it's only showing the Anthracite Grey: any ideas where this idea of a gunmetal grey comes from or have they just not put it on there??

(still think the new octy looks ugly! Too much like the offspring of a volvo and a hyundai!)

No worries, just saw your post when mine went up. The grey is nice... but it's not as nice as other manufacturers greys, if you know what I mean? Same with the red. My mate always buys black or red cos he says they're the best two colours as they make any car look sporty, and I can see what he means, but to me the flamenco red just looks so grandad-ish; very Rover. Not like BMW red which is good and fiery. Bit of a dissapointment really.

Sure you weren;t looking at a MK1 ? . The MK2 is much brighter

was there any recalls done on the VRS TDi's? or any common problems that should have been solved/need to solved?

No recalls as far as I am aware just make sure its had the latest software updates. There can be issues with clearing the DPF depending on what kind of driving you do on a daily basis(ie round town or motorway). However the latest software updates are supposed to have resolved these issues. Mines always regenerated fine.

Running cost must be low on these? as its a diesel.

I have never had any problems with mine at all.

As for running costs, I average around 46-47 mpg on my daily commute (66mile round trip) but have regularly got 50+ with a gentle right foot. 4 new tyres (Falken 452) cost me £250 and the new brakes (EBC Red front and rear) £200 fitted.

Hope that helps
