Woes

Hey All, been lurking for a while thought id post my latest saga....

Got new tyres fitted last week, Uniroyal Rainsport 2's 225 45 17 w, and they are awesome.

I havent been able to get my power down for a few months now, my old tyres were dodgy at best, and since having my new ones i have had both driveshafts bend and create a wobble when accelerating!!!

I have been quoted £330 for supplied and fitted both driveshafts and cv joints, does this sound reasonable?

Cant believe its happened, my car wont move now and i have a fusion 1.4 tdci as a courtesy car!!!

What are your thoughts, does the price seem ok?

thanks

dean

This is scarcely credible; I have never heard of new tyres causing bent driveshafts before.

Are the wishbone bushes ok, and have the front tyres been fingerplate balanced?

Are the driveshaft balance weights correctly attached?

Worst case, if the driveshafts really are warped, £330 fitted and including Brown's Bit does sound ok (and it should only be £322 now anyway).

i can confirm it was driveshafts, all is ok now.

im no mechanic so i just got a work mechanic to take a look for me, he said that they have been on their way out for some time looking at it and that the fraction of grip new tyres get have just pushed them over the edge!!!

thanks for the reply, i got £60 back for giving in my old ones so cost me £270 in the end - i can cope with that!

I have seen new tyres see off already worn out CV joints. To be more precise, the new fronts allow the driver to throw the car into bends in a way that they couldn't with worn tyres and that finishes off the CVs.

Over time, bad CVs can cause driveshaft damage (vibration from the CV cause the balance weights to come loose).

Did you have all the suspension components checked when the work was done? As Ken suspects, I think there maybe a suspension problem in the mix and it would be a real kicker if happened again.
