Not a great start to Octavia ownership!

Featured Replies

Ok, so I picked up my new VRS yesterday - very pleased so far. Spent all day cleaning it today, oil a little low so mortgaged my house and bought the correct stuff from Halfords, topped the oil up - then drove off without putting the filler cap back on

Can't believe I did it, never managed anything so stupid before!

I'm assuming this will be a 'ring the dealer' job? Quick look on eBay only shows Fabia diesel filler caps.

I don't think you'll find it too expensive. I just bought an Audi R8 one which was £20 ish.

£20 for a Oil filler cap!!!!!!!!!!!! :eek::eek::eek:

Big OOPS!!

Could happen to anyone "honestly".

A little bit perplexed that you found it necessary to top up the oil immediately you got the car. Perhaps your dealer on hearing your predicament will at least offer you a strong discount on a new cap since they were a bit economic with the "liquid gold".

A little suggestion...

I reckon that the undertray should stand a good chance of holding onto the filler cap since it is quite comprehensive at sealing the elements from the bottom of the engine and also keeping things from falling onto the road!!.

Good luck..

I've done that. I think most VAG oil fillers will fit, and yes, there's a fair bet it's sat on the undertray....

I picked up a brand new Hyundai Accent rental car once near Orlando - it had done 16 miles.

When I looked under the hood that evening (to check windscreen washer fluid etc,) there was no oil filler cap - just a gaping hole! The cap was stuck down the side of the engine, undamaged,

So much for PDI

It was a private sale, 3 months after the last service hence the oil check.

I had a good look around the engine bay area but gave up because I could see a fair amount of tarmac and assumed it was long gone - is it an easy job to get the undertray off?

Try scrapyard?

Yes, undertray seems to be held in with lots of Torx20 screws but looks simple enough to get off but would probably be better be jacked up to get it higher off the ground

All the caps are the same anyhow.

Seriously? this Fabia one would fit? The only reason I ask is that the seller has listed the models it will fit on the auction and it seems fairly specific.

Why bother with eBay until you've either checked the under tray or phoned a dealer?

Pretty sure they are all the same. Got a spare one if you want it?

Just checked, they aren't all the same.

VRStu - I won't be able to check the undertray properly until next weekend with work and winter daylight hours. My experience of SEAT dealers was that they only let you collect parts once ordered in, they won't post - maybe different at my local Skoda dealer however so I'll ring them tomorrow.

Lummox - very kind of you thanks. I'll make a couple of phonecalls and let you know if I need it.

Thanks all for the replies.

No need to take the tray off initially, lay on the floor and bang the tray underneath - If it's in there you should hear it.

Look in the Briskoda partners there is a Skoda dealers, if you must have mail order they'll help you.

Great excuse for an upgrade ;)

Nice tip - gave it a bang this morning before leaving for work and could here some tiny stones jumping up and down but nothing as substantial as a filler cap.

Dealer local to me has ordered one for £4.50 and will post it me by Weds so all sorted.

Thanks all.
