Help!!! Heater Fans Only Work On No.4 Position!

Featured Replies

Hi guys/gals.

Had another issue regarding the electrics tonight, the cabin heaters dont blow any air until i get to the No.4 position.

Then you have to tape your eyebrows down, not looking forward to work in the morning!

Can anyone guide me in the right direction?

I.E is it the thermal resistor on the actual blower unit thats gone pop (thats if they still use them!)

Or is it the actual switch thats probably duff?

Many Thanks In Advance.

Only heard of this on the Fabia up to now, but with them, it's the resistor pack not the switch. HTH

Ok thanks for the speedy reply!

I've had a few issues regarding the Clifford Alarm i had fitted, door locks not working while disarming. Then a two weeks later the siren packed in completely, since thats been replaced its been fine!

Was shocked when i realised it had stopped working tonight, so presuming its the resistor thats gone.

Is that a new motor jobbie or can you replace the actual resistor pack itself?

Years ago i understood these were a expensive part to go wrong (going back to the days of my dads vauxhall carlton). But with recent advancements in electronics etc etc id imagine cost wouldnt be as harsh.

If anyone has any ideas as to the cost then please get in touch!

Many Thanks Again!

It's called a Series Resistor, part number 1K0 959 263 A.

Should be accessible by removing the glove box.

I'm estimating £20 to £25.

I wish I'd known that a month ago, my dealer has just replace my whole fan motor at a cost of around £200 plus an hours labour!

Top man Stu!

Many thanks to your kind sir!

If i manage to get a day off during the week i will rip the offending part out, travelling too and from work has been a complete nightmare.

One on order with the dealers, £28.90 inc VAT!

Hopefully be able to drive in the warmth again soon and not get a headache.

They might have been right though. Had quite a few of these recently on the VW's but it would seem a high resistance in the motor burns out the resistor pack i think. The resistor can usually be replaced by just dropping down the foam covering under the pollen filter area, it sits right at the bottom.

In the past there was used resistor pack for fan speed control.

Inside the resistor pack is included and thermal protection device, protecting the resistors, if the fan goes overloaded (increased friction is common).

This protection device fails in most cases.

I have simply shunted the protection in my Jetta :o (not a good practice indeed).

In the modern cars there is power darlington NPN transistor follower in place of the resistors.

And again, of course - thermal protection device in the control circuit.

And again - this protection fails in common.

Replaced it last night and all is well now, the old series resistor was quite corroded also.

I ended up taking the glovebox out without reading this first! hahaha!

My mates one in his Mk3 Golf went on fire recently.

Not good.

Ive changed a few of these in the newer Passats along with the motors.

Nothing seemed to be discoloured or appeared abnormal with mine, just looked physically tired.

I think if i could source another resistor, then i would have a working spare.

Good news then.

Yup, can drive in warmth now without a headache

Thnx Stu!

Hi there, I have the same problem! and just out of warranty but I've no idea where to start looking for the resistor pack??? you say under the pollen filter, where's that? can anyone give me a quick idiots guide to finding the thing! Thanks in advance

Open the passenger door, and look under the glovebox. There will be a foam insert with two screws holding it up.

Remove the screws and pull the foam out, you should see the blower unit to the left and some plastic housing sweeping across to the centre console.

In the housing, there will be a white plastic component pertruding from the housing. Unclip the wiring connecting it.

Then the white component (resistor pack) will slide to one side and pull out.

Refitting is opposite of removal.

Cheers! thanks for the quick reply.... Now to order one! thanks again.

A quick update! installed new part in 5 minutes and all is working fine so far. Even had a chance to check that it was the thermal fuse on the end of the resistor pack that had blown.

I requested a quote from a dealer "up north" who said that I can't order the resistor pack on it's own, it has to come with fan and housing, approx £110. so an "on the off chance" call to my local dealer..... £30 or £60 to fit as well. So I Just got the part!

Annoying thing is, a thermal fuse of that rating only costs 90p but near impossible to solder without blowing the thing!

Any way, thanks again for advice folks.

I did manage to solder a new thermal fuse to my old pack, but on a hot day whilst i had the fans on in position No.3 the solder melted and the resistor managed to slide down the poles and short out.

Edited to explain myself a little better.

So.... the saga continues! new one lasted about a week:weeping:! so I fashioned one out of my 90p Maplin specials, a 10amp domestic connector block and the old resistor pack. I'll post some pictures soon..... it's still working 3 weeks on! :)

There is no way solder will melt in the heat of the day.

If you're blowing the thermal protection, could I suggest that the fan is overheating something.

Probably worth checking it isn't full of leaves.

I did have the fans on in the No.3 position at the time and it was some 30+ degrees outside, given that i did find out after it popped the thermal resistor. It kept popping 40amp fuses on the No.4 position.

I ended up removing the blower fan from the dash as it popped the 40amp fuse still after replacing the resistor pack. I then cleaned the windings out with brake cleaner as they were packed with dirt.

The bearings/bushes were rusting, so out came the good old "Triflo" lubricant and its been fine since!

Personally i think the load the blower was under and heat on the day, was what caused the solder on the replacment thermistor to melt and short the thermistor pack out. As it was firmly wedged across the central poles of the pack.

That i can believe.

My thoughts were along the line of solder melts around 350 to 450 degrees, depending on it's make up, but either way that's a lot hotter than just a hot day.

I think i should have explained myself a little better at the time, im not exactly an easy person to understand.

I've jut edited my last post, as to explain myself a little better. For if anyone else was to suffer the same symptoms as i have.
