Revo, but what's been done ?

Featured Replies

Afternoon. I've registered today after taking the plunge, trading in my Golf GTi Mk3 for a 56 Octavia VRS.

I've just returned home and discovered that in June 08 the previous owner paid £499 to have 'Revo software' installed.

I'm new to this, so I'd appreciate it if someone could provide me with answers to a few basic questions :

1. What exactly has been done ?

2. What differences will I see as opposed to the standard map ? BHP increase from 200 to ?

3. What will this do to my fuel economy ?

4. Do I need to declare this for insurance purposes ?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

I'll move this to mk2 octy section for a more general audience:)

1. Assume a stage 1 remap

2. Approx 235bhp

3. Potentially improve it as there is more torque available but it depends how you drive it

4. YES - you can't get away with pleading ignorance in the event that you need to make a claim and in unlikely event it is discovered by your insurer.

If you want a standard car then get your dealer to reflash the ECU and this will wipe the map.

Thanks for your quick reply. I think I'll get this removed at my next service, hardly seems worthwhile keeping it.

I think I would ask to have it switched off first either by a local REVO dealer or somone nearby with a Select Switch. Obviously I don't know you or your driving habits but my guess is you may miss it in which case it can be simply switched back on again free of charge.

Although it is possible it has already been removed if the dealer has done the recent ECU update. Again a local REVO dealer can tell you.

If you could get a drive in a different VRs you'd soon tell if yours was remapped or not.

My brother, Golf GTi Mk5 owner, has just been a passenger and as he's asked for contact details for Revo I guess it's still there.

Thanks to all who have replied, your advice is much appreciated.

Pete, thanks for the offer. I'm checking out insurance quotes (work in the industry so I don't like being naughty), I'll PM you once I find out what's what.

If it is remapped you are going to find the car disappointing if you remove it, there is a fair difference over standard.

After investigating the insurance implications I've decided to keep it modded.

When I told Esure they gave me 7 days to replace my cover, but I've found a good wholly UK-based insurer who will accept it, with better cover and for £35 less than Esure wanted for a standard VRs.

All's well that ends well.

Can I ask who? Got a remap on the cards myself and it's hard to find friendly insurers...

It's a new company : Salaam Halal insurance homepage - Low cost Islamic Halal insurance, Ethical insurance, Muslim insurance, Takaful insurance . It might look a little strange as it is Takafal insurance, designed for muslims but it's open to anyone, regulated by the FSA. Their service centre (new business, mid term changes and claims) is in Cheadle, Cheshire, no Indian call centres. They work on a points basis, the more you get the more expensive it gets. Luckily I'm a good boy so not many points.

I work in insurance and can confirm that this company will be a lot safer and easier to deal with if anything goes wrong than going via a Lloyds company or one registered in Gibraltar.

If it helps, I'm 39, license for 20yrs, SP30 in 05, years protected bonus. £250 excess, legal expenses, I'm paying £585 a year including instalment charges. Adrian Flux wanted £875 ! Esure wanted £610 for me with a standard VRS.

My mod puts my BHP at +15%, but I would keep the same price for up to 30%.

Cheers - got nothing to lose by calling for a quote, although I'd already had a quote of just over 400 from LV.com and just under 500 from elephant. For reference, I'm 28 y/o, 6yrs protected NCB, £350 excess, legal cover, clean license since 9 years with pass plus.

Bit concerned about the LV quote though since their modifications page is not very specific, with the closest option being "Engine management chip changed", with no real mention of power increase! Not sure whether to take advantage of that vague wording or not :)

Speak to them about it, it's always better safe than sorry.

Check for a sticker in the boot in the spare wheel well.

Also it may be noted in the service book.
