A friend of mine with an early Octavia TDi had a water pump fail which was followed in quick succession by the cylinder head gasket failing. The subsequent repair, which included the newly replaced camshaft belt being replaced again, was very expensive - IIRC well over

What normally happens with the water pumps is the plastic impeller falls off the back of the water pump due to the centre part cracking. This leads to overheating.

If it happens before your warranty is up it will be covered. i.e get the labour paid for cambelt and new water pump.
