Hello peeps, i am 14 and i want to be a car designer when i grow up. Here is a couple of sketches i did so you can all have a look.

The first one is a Range-Rover i designed, then a VW Camper Van i also designed, and finally a Land-Rover Discovery 3 (cos my Dads buying one in the summer!:))

Please tell me what you think!

You've certainly got some talent there with a pen, but you also need a naturally creative mind.If you've got the time and want a little task, here's one.

If you where approached by Skoda and they asked you come up with some ideas for a new 7 seat MPV what would you draw?

I'll have a think about that one!

The drawings look ace!

You've definitely got the technical skills to put the ideas onto paper, but I think it's important with concepts to have only a whiff of the original in with the creativity - I'd say that those ones are maybe the other way around, where many of the features are similar to existing models but with slabbed sides and large wheels.

Having said that, I think you've really got the knack of spotting the key design elements that make a product recognisable and then reworking them such that the brand identity is still there - there's no doubt that the last one is a Land Rover, for example. I'd say the next step is to combine the two approaches by creating shapes you like that fit the style you have in mind, and then working those key elements in. If you do it that way, your ideas stay at the front and you're not a slave to the existing designs. When designers go on about 'design languages' they're taking about a whole load of lines, shapes and proportions that will all suggest a particular brand when put together, and if you can create your own by thinking about how the finished product should feel, and then work with it to produce multiple designs, you're laughing :)

Minor technical point though - the wheel offset is a bit strange on the far side of each car. For the front wheels to be visible past the bonnet they'd have to stick out by a good 2-3ft. It's only because the rest of the designs are so on the ball that it's noticeable :)

Can't wait to see the next lot :)

Very good :)

That's a good start. I'm going to offer a hand here - I suggest you look at this thread:

Talk to L-Y-K send him a PM about what he is doing and how he got into it. The work this guy is producing is amazing (I'm sure he will have all the answers to the questions you ask).

Other main point is to keep on working. In a few years time you will look back on your old drawings and think they are rubbish - This will help you to improve with your work.

Goodluck and make sure you post some more up.

Hope this helps,

Rob

I did the deliberitly, because i think it shows off the 'Wheel at each corner' stance! I have shown another design i found on the interweb showing other examples of that 'Wheel at each corner stance' but i apprietiate everything you said especially about staying infront of current designs and being more creative instead of just reworking other vehicles, so thanks!

And finally, to 'Allams Skoda', here is a Skada MPV which i worked on after school. (sorry about the pic quality) Again, it is a little 'Skoda-ish' with inspiration from the new Superb and Roomster, and i will try to be more original, but it was drawn before reading your post.

So tell me what you think and more Sketches wii come your way!

Really nice drawings, I must say!

The latter is by no doubt felt as a Skoda, aside from the name you wrote on the plate :)

I like the design of your front headlamps much more than those on latest Octavia restyling.

Good talent.

Good drawings mate. Keep it up.

To say your 14 and to look at those drawing I'd say your heading in the right direction of becoming what you want to do. Very good indeed. Can you do one for me hehe
