Drivers seat position

Featured Replies

This has to rank as one of the dumbest threads on here but bear with me.

Does anyone else who owns a classic version of the Superb find the driving position awkward?

It's the seat itself ie: not the back rest or head rest. The actual base of the drivers seat has no tilt function. You can slide it back forwards and raise it up and down ... but not tilt it. Or am I just missing something blindingly obvious?

I'm used to bucket seats where your @®Š€ is sunk into the seat and the front is raised slightly. Driving position in my Superb feels all wrong and it's bloody annoying, like when I hit the brakes I'm about to slide off the front of the seat into the steering wheel.

Does anyone have any experience removing the seat and if so can they be adjusted in any way?

Tempted to say it's my fault for being tall and having a long torso and shorter legs ... but it's not. It's Skoda's fault for not designing their cars around my specific requirements. :thumbdwn:

I agree with you to some extent - the seats in the Superb are not wonderful and I nearly crossed it off my list of runners when shopping for it because of this. I found the higher up the trim scale, the worse they became with leather hopeless because of no grip - the seats are not properly shaped so you slide on them. For me, leather is also intolerably cold/hot in winter/summer.

I find that the trick is to use the seat height adjuster to compensate for the fact that the fore and aft adjustment is too coarse - I invariably want the seat between two clicks. If you raise the seat, it moves forward as well as up and vice-versa. So, if you're not too bothered about height, you can set the seat relative to the pedals by this means, then fiddle with the steering column.

The worst problem for me is that although I'm not tall, I have wide shoulders and the back of the seat pinches me on the left side. One day, I'll go in there with an upholstery needle and some big buttons and pin it back - I don't think there is an airbag on that side, but then I don't care very much...

While I'm going to resist the temptation to comment on your "dumb" admission I still think it's worth a mention...

I'll stick my oar in here - I can do without the seat squab adjustment, but I agree that inherently the Superb's driving position isn't the best ever. It's taken me nearly two years and about 30k to get mine correct, by fiddling with the height, column reach/angle, backrest...

The one thing that really annoys me though is the headrest - I'm 6'1" with 32" inside leg and no matter what I do I can't rest my head on the headrest without looking at the roof lining not the road.

As a result, I'm not looking forward to the whiplash when I eventually get rear ended by some **** on the A46. :thumbdwn:

BTW Allclowns, if you're used to buckets... what were you driving before your Superb, and why the, er, massive change?

Okey dokey, kinda relieved others have the same opinion and it's not just me.

I agree with the comment about the headrest. I'm just under 6'2'' and have a 31'' inside leg, and yeah same applies here. If you want to stick your head on the headrest you're staring at the roof lining. Volvo do the best headrests on the market .... only they're so big when you come to junctions they tend to encroach into your field of vision when checking left and right.

I can easily imagine the leather being a swine too. No grip and hot/cold weather etc.

It'd have been rude not to mention it mate.

As for what I drove before. The last motor before the Superb was a Peugeot 406 coupe 3.0 v6. Got that purely for the shape. Always liked it .... only after a time someone commented it looked similar to a Calibra .... and that's not good. Before that was a BMW 325i, Mazda RX7 ..... now that was fun 0-60 in 4.7sec. Alfa 155 V6. Triumph TR6, Merc 190e. Also had a Series 3 Land Rover 110, ex military and a Toyota Surf 4x4 at some point. However my first car was .... wait for it. A Rover 216se. Shaped like a block of cheese and had the performance of a glacier. Many many things happened to that car, some inflicted by myself and some just being a result of Rover build quality. The front axel snapped in half for no apparent reason one day, town centre, rush hour. Both front wheels lurched skywards and belted the front wings off. Even I had to see the funny side .... as did many passers by.

The reason for the switch to Superb was based on fuel economy and the fact I quite liked Audi A4s. I used to work for the MoD and trained as a driver some years ago. We'd use Audis there quite a bit. The Superb seemed essentially the same car and being a fashion-phobe the Skoda badge appealed to me.

Hmmmmm annnnyhow as for the seat. I'm tempted to tear the thing out and see if there's anywhere you can insert a riser for it to tilt the front up a little. If I come up with anything half safety concious I'll post back. In the meantime my excuse to any traffic police will be

"Well you see officer it's the seat! It tilts forward and if I don't keep my foot jammed on the throttle I'll slide into the steering column. It really is quite a bad design .... now as for the bag of conflict diamonds in the boot well there's a funny story about that ....."

Just to play devils advocate....

6ft 3, 32" inside leg, 48" chest, 18 stone here!

I hate seats that sit down at the back & up at the front, they cut into my thighs too much & make it a very uncomfortable position. I bought my Kia after 3 Octys & have never had cause to complain about the position, just the lack of lumbar which I sorted with a professional Mcenzie Lumbar Roll.

I've never driven a Superb except for a very short distance but if the seats are similar to the Octy then they wont suit me.

I miss the front tilt tbh.

well, just to be awkward I guess...

I'm 6'1'' and 31 1/2'' leg (that half inch means a lot!) and I'm happy with the seats.

I've got an Elegance and, yes, the leather is slippy on corners - but it is a pseudo-luxobarge after all. I'd be unhappy if it was a genuine VRs.

Electric squab tilt on the Elegance too , so I don't know what the manual seats are like.

And I don't have a problem with the head restraints (as in restraint, not rest). Tilt the restraint forward and position vertically so that when you put your head back the point of contact is just at the top of your ears and there's no way you'll get whiplash. Unless the seat back is really reclined.

But I agree that getting the position right is a pain. Of course, the more there is to adjust the more variation there will be. First time I had it serviced it came back with the seat and steering wheel in completely different positions - must have been serviced by someone seriously vertically challenged - and I hadn't set the seat position memory so it took days to get it right again, and another week to get the wheel right.

I have had my Barge 5 1/2 yrs now, and find the drivers seat perfect for position and comfort. I,m 6ft1, 33 inside leg and suffer badly with my lower back and I can get out the car after any amount of driving without any problems.

6ft 5in and 38in inseam :)

Anyway, the original comment is valid, which is the reason why I did the same thing as earlier in the Octavia - I manufactured a 7mm thick steel plate with 2 rows of 3 holes 25mm apart, and fitted it on the front seat mount. This raises the front of the seat by 25mm compared to stock and makes driving position perfect for me. Only basic tools are required (angle grinder+pillar drill), but you need good quality M8 screws and flange nuts, plus several flat and spring washers to make sure that the whole thing is securely put together.

Entire development together with a diagram of the plate was documented here Moving seat back and up in A4 VW - DONE - TDIClub Forums, I noticed that there are now other methods listed at the end.

Note that currently I am using just the plates without spacers described in the original text, since it is more secure that way and the plate provides 90% of the effect required.

A Rover 216se.

Do I even need to write anything here? ;)

Anyway, to bring it back on-topic I understand S6 Recaros fit into the Superb without an issue. If memory serves someone around here has done that...

The guide Diesel posted above looks good - I'm happy with my driving position as it stands but it's good to know I've another option. Thanks

Correct the A6 / S6 front seats are a direct replacement (although the airbag plug is different so you will need to swap them over).

I have the electrically adjustable S6 seats in mine as i suffer with lower back problems so needed proper lumbar adjustment that the non electric seats don't give you.

S6 seats are plentiful, but the other option of Superb Elegance seats are a bit rare to find.

Cheers for the guide you posted man it's something similar I was going to try. The guide will help.

Bluefox .... lay off my Rover 216se, it was a fantastic car and served me ...... oh wait hang on, talking bull again.

I knew someone did, thanks Gizmo.

Anyway, Allclowns, I will say no more about Rovers. My first car was a Vx Nova with more rust than a... er... Rover.
