Noisy Vrs gearbox in Neutral on Tickover

Well. :(

Had the car just over a day & noticed a Shuddery thod type noise from the gearbox when ticking over in neutral.... Now. This noise is similar to what i have heard before both on a Fiat & a vauxhall that i owned which both had Dual mass Flywheels :rolleyes:

When i first looked at the car & listened there was nothing, it sounded quite sweet (For a diesel) But tonight it was quite apparent & dissapeared when the clutch pedal was depressed (Like me now).

I take it my Dmf is grumbling :rolleyes:.

The car had stood for 12 Hrs + & when i moved it up The drive & let the clutch out the noise had dissapeared, Hmm i thought, lack of oil circulating ? But realising they have a Dmf fitted, Im sure it's more likely that & seeing as the car has covered 92k !

I shall have to notice if it does it when the engine is hot ! Although again, i did not notice it yesterday at all :(

Thoughts please ?

EDIT - Found this, YouTube - 3D animation of dual mass flywheel can anyone tell me which part causes the clunking, is it one of the springs thats damaged?

Because i think ill be trying this job myself with the assistance of a mechanic mate to cap the labour cost.

DMF usually sounds like someone is belting the engine with a big hammer. The flywheel still turns when the clutch is in, so if the noise goes away completely with the clutch in, I doubt it's the DMF unless it's just starting to go.

Might be gearbox bearings. I would have gearbox oil changed and go from there. I would also check the engine mountings, especially the rear dogbone mount.

I think it is just starting to go, as my vauxhall Vectra Cdti 150 started the same & progressively got worse with more of a knock being heard, I will change the Gearbox oil though & see if it make's a difference.

I do believe that not all are springs, Some have a gel type pack which absorbs the shocks Etc. The springs/packs become worn allowing the 2 Flywheels to chatter Etc ..

And to think, Cars managed perfectly fine for Decades on Good Ole Steel Flywheels !! :rolleyes:

Still Sh!te in my oppinion. Anything that is under heavy loadings that already has play in there will eventually get fatigue & become more problematic ...

Sounds like clutch release bearing to me.
