losing power (momentarly) in 3rd gear?

Featured Replies

Hi -

Under normal driving conditions I move into 3rd gear and I find pushing the accelerator doesn't inject any power into the car. If I step off the accelerator and press again the power kicks in. Any ideas why this might be happenning. A few years ago I had to replace the throttle housing as the engine kept reving up and down in stand still, this problem is happening again but I don't recall losing ay power the previous time the throttle housing caused an issue?

could be the maf poss!

I can't see why the MAF would be gear-specific? Still, it's an easy one to test. Disconnect the wiring plug between the air filter and the turbo, and if the car runs better, then you need a new MAF!

Guys -

O.K having looked up what an MAF (Mass Air Flow) is then this would seem like a good starting point alright. Thanks Now to locate and disconnect MAF :-(. Will update with results.

Hi -

O.k. I'm a bit embarrased now....as my car is a 00 CDI i.e. not a turbo and therefore doesn't have a MAF I believe. Now a friend of mine mentioned that it sounds like the spark plugs need changing. From reading other threads I am wondering if it could be the air filter and associated piping as well....although one would imagine that should be problamatic across all gears.

I know I have a problem of the throttle housing becoming clogged with carbon deposits however it's only in the early stages.

When I get a chance I'll change plugs myself and change the air filter.
