Get the Octavia or not?

Featured Replies

Right. At the moment i own a PD130 Ibiza tdi. My dad has an Octy Vrs. In about 11 months he will be getting rid, and he is giving me first refusal at a knock - down. I love my ibiza to bits, but have driven the VRS and have grown quite fond of it.

My Ibiza has done 84k

The Octavia will have about 100k on it by that time.

I do about 12k a year, so economy isn't really that big of an issue.

Can anyone here give me a good reason for which one i should keep? :)

Whichever one you like the best :)

Look at how much extra the tax and insurance will cost you. That may decide for you :)

12k a year is several hundred pounds more fuel in the VRS.

Also I guess you know about this, but compared to your 6 speed (if you have the 6) the VRS is revving away on a motorway and less relaxing at outside lane speeds. Then there is the lack of mid range punch, unless something is wrong with it at 2,300rpm in 4th if you choose to overtake a van yours should give a hard shove in the back with no need to change down. The VRS will wind up more gradually and having driven a few (in the TT as well) I never really get that 'shove in the back' sensation due to having to wind it up to 6,000 by which time the moment has passed. Unless you drive like a lad and sit behind tractors at 5,000rpm for 4 miles before spotting a gap, then you get instant shove in the back with no need to change down!

Then factor in that £250 will give you around 180bhp thanks to remap, make your 0-60 better than the VRS and increasing torque way above even remapped VRS. That kind of belt in the back without needing to change down with great mpg and a bit lighter bit more 'fluid' handling body would make me go with the Ibiza to drive.

Don't get me wrong, the VRS is a very nice drive and it's quick. I drive a 1.8T myself and do like them. But after jumping out of a VRS into a 130PD 6-speed I just get a grin off the gurunt it has in normal driving conditions. VRS goes quick when you wind it up but isn't as much fun for me.

Greg.

Just get the vRS....

You know you want to!

2 questions you need to ask: Does it go really fast? Does it look cool?!

That's a no then. :P

Greg has hit the nail on the head. For day to day use the PD130 is so much more usable and more than adeqauete speed wise.

I made the same choice, actually an Octi PD130 over a VRS, and I had up until that point always driven properly swift cars.

In a race the VRS just wins on pace, but you don't drive around racing all day do you! Running costs wise - road tax/fuel/insurance - the decision is obvious!

And the PD130 engine will be clocking up miles long after the 1.8T is on the scrap heap.

I have a remapped 1.9TDi 130 Bora at the moment and I'm picking up my Octavia II vRS on Sunday. I have to be honest and say that I am a little worried about the change as I am so used to the diesel "shove" and the in gear acceleration in motorway type situations is very hard to match. I know the 2.0T won't but after having a couple of 1.8T's in the past I think I'll manage with a slight change in driving style.

The 130 is a brilliant engine and is very tractable especially when remapped. If you're used to that and lazy driving is your style, stick with it. If you want more of a hooner, then get the vRS. Having said that, the Bora doesn't totally disappoint if I'm driving briskly, but it handles like a dog and having to double tap the accelerator when using heel and toe is pretty annoying and can really hinder the flow of the drive.

As Greg and Kandy say...

if I had to choose between my old octi vrs or my current pd130 it would be a very difficult decision. I didn't think there would be a great deal of difference between them once the pd130 was modded.

both have their merits and down sides, ultimatley the decision is yours.

I wouldn't worry about the Octavia's overtaking ability. Ultimately it will wipe the floor with the PD130 Ibiza in pretty much any situation. I don't want to upset the Fabia owners on the site, I do think they're cracking cars but ultimately the Octy is a more capable by a fair margin.

The Ibiza PD130 offers a nice 'smack in the back' wave of power and all that torque makes for a very relaxed driving style, and the potential for excellent economy figures. I think it's easy to jump into the Octavia vRS from the Ibiza/Fabia and be a little disappointed, but it demands a different driving style and once you've adopted that, it's a much more rewarding 'drivers car'. I always find the power from the PD130 has come and gone before you know what's happening.

I agree with the argument that the 6 speed PD130 is better suited to lane-3 cruising, but at the same time, the Octavia vRS is very competent at these speeds and whilst the revs are higher, it's not exactly rattling itself to bits. Personally I find the larger body of the Octavia makes for better high-speed stability which goes some way to balancing up the higher revs argument.

The 1.8t is more refined than the PD130 and has quite smooth power delivery which can give the impression that it's not actually particularly quick, so you need to keep your eyes on the speedo if you want to keep your license. The PD130 lets you know when you're going quickly, which adds to the fun factor I suppose.

If economy is no issue then I would take the Octavia every time. But don't underestimate the running costs. Fuel, Tax, Brakes, Tyres etc will all cost you more.

I've recently changed from a remapped Ibiza 130PD to a Vrs estate and I'm very pleased - don't do a huge amount of miles (8K a year-ish) and the pure cost to pocket for fuel is about the same. The Vrs is more practical (for me, due to big labrador) and is a much smoother drive. Part of me does miss the shove in the back the derv gave though...

Drive em both and see which you prefer!

Very well put.

I agree with the speed of the octavia, it's so smooth you don't notice it. Then you look down and your doing 100mph in 4th. I tend to sit at 120-130mph when in Germany, and it's rock solid. It's very comfortable at speed.

Dam, this has got me thinking again too. I was thinking of upgrading\swapping my diesel Mk1 Leon (130) for either a Mk1 or Mk2 Octavia VRS. Was going to take the hit on running costs to have a 'proper' hot hatch at least once in my life! I do the love the shove of my 6 speed though.

Great forum you've got here. Sorry I haven't introduced myself in the right place. Des.

sod costs, what is life with out fun and a smile, get the VRs cheap, drive it and then when you get board, mod the hell out of it.

Life is for living not going round in a tractor, working out what mpg you are doing.

There will be plenty of time for working the mpg out when you get old and grey, and a people carrie is your choice of motor

(If you must have a tractor thats sporty get an Astra 1.9 cdti 150 n these can be chipped to 200bhp:eek:)

We have a 2005 VW Bora 130tdi highline with 23k miles and also hve a 2005 Octy VRS with 88k on it.

For economy the derv wins hands-down, on short runs the Octy only gets around 25mpg ave, where the Bora tdi does around 43mpg on the same run. However, the derv will never handle like the Octy, the diesel engine is heavy and pulls it straight forward in corners. The Octy is a really good driver and is no slouch (I say this having previously owned various volvo T5's and a mondeo 2004 ST220).

Performance wise the Octavia only has a slight edge off the mark due to the low down torque of the derv engine, but get it above 4k revs and its much better than the derv. Its also a much smoother power delivery and its much better in the snow (fact!).

Personally although our Bora has over 60k less miles on it, I always grab the keys for the Octy and the wife ends up with the Bora!!! ******** to the extra running costs!!!
