Vag-com

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Sorry if I sound a bit thick but I'm confused. A lot of the threads posted on this web mention the infamous "VAG-COM" can anybody please let me know what it is.

I'm also after some advice when I took delivery of my VRS last April (from a Tax free dealer in Brighton) I asked for the following to be added to the order but was advised against it. Maxi Dot, Jumbo box, Electric rear windows and Xenons. Is it possible to add a maxi dot and a jumbo box at this late stage? If so does anyone know where I can get them from and possibly advise me how to fit them.

Sorry also wanted Dual Climate control, Yeah I know seen off by the dealer.

Once again if I sound like a complete tube sorry.

In short:

VAG-COM is a diagnostics program that allows your PC to talk to your ECU

If you want to find out more information there's a little bit here:

maxi dot can be done, not sure about a jumbo box. vag com however is a great bit of kit that plugs car into pc and you can alter things, improve things and also f--- up things too!!

Cheers Mate, any ideas where I can get one?????

Are they easy enough to fit and to get working????

VAG-COM or VCDS is in two parts. You download the software to your laptop and then get a Ross tech lead that plugs into the port in your car.

This thread has a few links to get you going...

That bit is nothing to do with VAG-COM, it's call the user!

Don't be tempted with a knock off eBay cable as you need the genuine thing to work on your car.

Yeah still none the wiser I understand it's something that garages tend to have to diagnose problems/faults. What do you gain by having this??? Or how do I know if my car has it. Is there anybody who lives in Warwickshire area who is on this site who could shed some light on the subject for me.

Cheers

Every car after 1996 (IIRC) has on OBD (On Board Diagnostics) plug in the car, this plug enables dealers and mechanics to plug their diagnostic equipment (VAG-COM / VCDS is the best non dealer diagnostic software for VAG cars) into the car to read any fault codes the car has.

VAG-COM also does a whole lot more than just diagnostics however, just some of the things that can be done are off the top of my head are

:

enabling a 'beep' when you lock the car with the remote

changing the alarm sound

enabling just the drivers door to be unlocked with the remote (press the button twice & all the doors unlock)

enable anti hijack (doors automatically lock at a set speed)

enabling cruise control

throttle body alignment

ignition timing adjustment

changing the time the glow plugs heat up

coding for new keys

enabling maxi dot

resetting the variable service indicator

plus LOTS more, not forgetting it will show all the fault codes (and clear them)

Thanks very much, that has helped and given me an insight to the whole VAG-COM thing. Next thing to do is find someone near me who would be able to do some of the above.
