How Long Does It Take Your 1.9TDI To Warm Up?

Hi all, not sure if this is just a diesel thing (my 1st diesel car).

Out all the other diesel vehicles ive driven, never really taken any notice as its been the company vehicles.

The usual stint to work takes roughly 30mins. By 20mins its only just got to 90 degrees mark.

Get it on a motorway straight away and the needle raises straight to 90!

Now im wondering if the thermostat is sticking?

After a short drive before the coolant has come up to temp. The car can be left idling for say 10mins and the guage may just settle below 1/4 of a way on the temp guage and stay there :thumbdwn:.

Sounding familiar to others or is my stat on its way out?

Also does anyone notice there turbo picks up speed after its been idling for a couple of minutes?

A light tap of the throttle stops the turbo whailing and it settles back to normal for a while, before returning again.

The car has almost 125k on and theres no signs of the turbo being replaced as of yet.

With it being a big lump of an engine, it will need to be under load for

it to warm up in this weather :)

My old one used to take ages ...but the new one warms up after a short (3 mile) stint to drop off SWMBO

My mk1 Octy 1.9tdi takes up to 6 miles to warm up at the minute with the weather been cold, and if left ticking over from start up the gauge will hardly move after 10mins.

just remember one thing, if your water is showing temperature after a short time period, it doesn't mean the engine is warmed up as oil takes a lot longer to heat.

That's all normal behaviour.

I read something about this somewhere quite recently, may even have been somewhere on Briskoda. It went something like this:

Because diesel engines are bigger lumps than petrols and basically more efficient, they don't reach operating temperature just by idling alone. You have to actually drive them to reach operating temperature. I've only just changed from a 1.8 petrol MX-5 to a 2.0 diesel Octy, the time it takes to warm up (and hence warm the cabin!) is noticeably longer.

Your warm up is normal. My drive to work is 20mins, 8 miles, very little stop/start, all downhill and on the flat so the engine does bu66er all work - not unusual to show 75+ mpg on the trip computer for this journey. In winter the temp gauge never reaches 90deg.

The turbo thing is not normal - mine never makes a sound - you'd never know it was there.

damn, im planning on the new audi a4 3.0tdi next, i bet that will take ages to get warm!

I start my vRS TFSi up a few minutes before i set off and leave it ticking over, put the heated mirrors, windscreen clear and heated rear window on to load the engine up a little bit. lock the door with the spare key and its normally nice and warm by the time i get in

Don't worry. I do a 10 mile commute and mine is exactly the same.

The next concern is the turbo, it isnt really a whine...its just like the noise as it comes on boost.

Arn't these turbos Variable Vaned?

Wonder if the vanes are moving and causing it to pick up speed?

In this weather about 6 miles.

Octavia 4x4 1.9 diesel

Yep Fabia Vrs takes approx 8 miles at 60-70 mph to warm up on duel carriage way or 2000-2200 RPM

What you hear on drive is probably the ERG valve, blip of the throttle and will disappear. totally normal as far as im aware. Turbo wont be licking in till 1500 rpm ish

My PD140 takes about 6 - 7 miles to reach 90 degrees and there's no point in leaving it idling on the drive to warm up - 'cos it doesn't!

My PD140 takes at least 7 miles in this weather and often doesn't reach full temperature by the time I get home from work (10 miles).

It won't be the turbo, it will be the EGR. At 125k it may well be full of gunk and need cleaning.

I've had the EGR off and cleaned it out not so long since, will have to take it off and try again.

What causes the whirring noise? I.E whats going off inside of the egr valve body to cause the whirring?

Are we all talking about the amount of time it takes for the water to reach temperature? so when the water reaches 90 deg, do you start giving the engine more welly? because if you do you are disillusioned, the oil takes an age to warm up. I base my base my facts on the oil temp gauge I had in my Seat Ibiza 130 sport.

Mine takes an age, diesels are very (relative to petrols) thermally efficient so take an age to warm up, mine takes about 6 miles to warm and im on the motorway after the first 3. I wouldnt worry about it too much, the less heat created is less fuel wasted to creat that heat.

No i dont give it welly after 90 degrees, if im going to its going to be around 20-30mins after its made it to 90 degrees before i do that.

Hi I´m new here and from Denmark so please bare with my bad English.

Here´s a tip from Denmark, switchs the climatronic in the econ mode, that will stop the fan behind the radiator from running continiusly, and make the warm up a bit faster.

I dont have a air conditioning on my car, its only a base model. So no need for a extra fan for the aircon.
