Cool

A big big learning curve ahead, Andy.

I've found in the past that reading the manual is one thing but you can pick up a lot of info from reading some of the reviews (esp as sometimes they explain things that 'easy-to-assimilate-manuals' :( do not .

..and reading up will do your head in so just do 10 mins at a time and then put the material down - slowly but surely it will sink in.

Great

And when you're ready to learn all the ins and outs, I can't recommend Thom Hogan enough. His writing is easy to understand, yet he's masterly when it comes to all the details :)

Oooooh look, he's written a guide for the D80 already :D

You don't have to take any pictures to bore us Andy....

You do well enough as it is....

Well I'm very jelous!

Hope your ready for some learning, you'll probably get frustrated at first but persist and you'll get some good shots and remember to take your camera absolutely everywhere.

As long as there are no self portraits.

I found it was best to start by taking photos of houshold objects to become used to the many settings and controls on my new camera.

This was one of my first images

Not the best but I was happy with my first try

I hope you have as much fun as I now do.

I never really thought about taking my pictures in the buff - Is that how the Pro Photographers always make people smile :o

Congrats:thumbup:

The D80 is a lovely camera, you'll have loads of fun with it.

A useful & friendly web site here NikonCafe.com - Powered by vBulletin

I'll second Nikoncafe. They're incredibly welcoming and some people there have a lot more knowledge and experience than your average sports tog at the weekend footies.

Some chaps there have well over £20k's worth of glass  yet they're very down to earth and not the slightest bit pretentious  I'm on there and have asked some "noob" type questions and have always received down-to-earth replies.

Santa arrived early in my house with these two beauties

my second D3

God, the day Postman Pat gets a D80 is the day I need the D300!

Nice one Andy, bet you can't wait :)

God, the day Postman Pat gets a D80 is the day I need the D300!

And just why would that be????? Given that I was working as a photographer before you were born:rolleyes:

Goodness me, someone didn't place their sense of humour in this morning did they?

I really want a D300!

I hope I can get one in Jan/Feb, but I'll have to spend lots of money on expensive glass after that, it's an expensive hobby this!

I'd like one too.... it's tempting to just go and get one, but I'm too cautious with money lol! I just think 'hmmm...do I REALLY need one?' Probably not :( but hey, you never know, maybe I will treat myself :)

Didn't see the comment as particularly humorous tbh, condescending and offensive yes, funny no.

From a person who doesn't know me at all I would accept that, from someone who does - sorry, no ;)

Out of curiosity, how come you gave it up then? Even I have made money from photography without ever having set up a 'business' or work as one, just from friends asking for wedding etc. Can make a lot from doing it. What made you change to postmannery - or whatever the correct terminology is?

 OK so you ain't being baited ;)

The type of photography I did was quite 'specialised' required very little actual skill and wasn't something that could be turned into a career (well not for me) it did however pay the beer tab working both sides of the lens:) (what a man will do in his teenage years).

Postmannery is more a hobby (walking) that pays the same beer tab but is more respectable :) (and for those that don't know me either, there was a short period of actually working between the two)

BTW sure you would have been excellent at smudging and modelling in the same field

You were a nude* model? Lets see the pics then! Lol! I thought the photography would be more of a hobby than the delivering (I hate delivering if I'm honest! And walking, but then I'm just plain lazy) If I ever manage to get a sideline in photography then I'd be happy - always nice to make money from a hobby.

*Yes, this bit was assumed, but certainly adds to the story lol

Modelling in fields? Yes, I am fond of fields

Well I did at one time go under the alias of the 'Pink Panther' and two of my female models where 'Busby' and 'Gizmo'. Wonder if any of our work is still adorning mantel pieces around the UK??

You were a nude* model? Lets see the pics then! Lol!

Lets NOT! :Yikes::scared::weeping: Unless, that is, you and PP both post up pictures  :naughty:

Nice camera btw, I struggle with a simple camera so think I'll pass on the high tech stuff.
