Service Pack 3 & blue screen of death

Featured Replies

Has anyone had problems with installing SP3 and then on reboot getting the error blue screen of death?

I just decided to install it last night thinking I was doing the right thing and almost destroyed my computer!

Managed to restart in safe mode after a few attempts, then using system restore didnt even work to get it back to normal.

I had to go in via add or remove programs and uninstall SP3. All seems ok now so far but what a nightmare - especially for what i expected to be a genuine problem free bug FIXING update!

I have a dell inspiron 9400, T7200, 7900GS graphics with 2GB memory.

Surely it cant be just me had this problem?

Wont be updating unless absolutely necessary now and auto updates are definately a no!

Yes, I had the same problem, Dell Dimension 9200. I am now running Service pack 3 however I had to download new graphics drivers from nVidia.

Had problems following an update - strangely enough it's not my Nvidia drivers that got hit -was my HP monitor stuff .Got round it by using XP disc ,selecting repair ,then chkdisk / f

There were some cases of this using the windows update version of sp3. Using a CD or the full downloaded version was OK. It was something to do with kernel versions for different processors.

Redfab,

You dont by chance have an AMD processor. I have just fixed a mates one that Blue screened after installing SP3. The fault was down to Microsoft installing a power management service for intel processors into the service pack. This is obviously not required for AMD chips.

If its not that it could be anything. Does device manager show any conflicts with hardware?

EDIT: Just noticed T7200 in original post so no AMD chip in your rig.

That's what I was thinking of. It doesn't affect SP3 applied from a CD if you download the ISO, IIRC.

Thats good to know. So that fault only appears if you install SP3 through Windows/Microsoft Update?

Confirming mine is an intel one. I didnt bother checking to see any problems with device manager. Didnt want to bother! As soon as it was started in safe mode I just worked on getting back to SP2 as it worked great prior to SP3. I've came to the conclusion that if it aint broke, dont fix it!

There will come a time when no doubt i will have to carry out this update tho and until then i intend to just research it and try to work out the solution before i install it again. The advice about using the disc instead of the windows update sounds good tho when the time comes!
