Two problems to watch out for on the 1.4 8 valve. I notice you have also posted about it using coolant.

If your temp gauge is taking longer than normal and not staying up, then your thermostat needs replacing. It is a very easy job on this engine. This may also be the reason for your coolant level loss, but more likely, the temp sender into the radiator is leaking. (bottom on near side of car from memory) you can replace the brass washer but I ended up sealing mine up with some instant gasket. Skoda tried to sell me a new rad but this was not necessary.

I would have thought that if the temp gauge goes up, but not as much as usual, the temp sensor is working. Therefore the thermostat is the fault. The temp sensor will be only a few quid from memory so I guess try that first, but I bet it's not that.

Get the whole Thermostat Housing , they are prone to failing , and Ive had this happen to my car, The part number was (2007 but i suspect its still the same) 047121111S and it was £31.42 plus VAT at the time. I had that replaced and haven't had a problem since.
