Anything in the event viewer? Try sending yourself an email from a hotmail account or something and watch the event viewer to see if anything pops up.

I've tried running the mail wizard in exchange and i get " to send internet email, the selected server cannot be a bridgehead server"

sent an email from my hotmail even viewer showed

A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.4.0 was generated for recipient rfc822;[email protected] (Message-ID ).

Causes: This message indicates a DNS problem or an IP address configuration problem

Solution: Check the DNS using nslookup or dnsq. Verify the IP address is in IPv4 literal format.

can you server resolve external DNS?

Are you using DNS forwarders, or Host Hints? The DNS on the NIC(s) on your server *should not* be pointing to your router otherwise AD will throw a wobbly.

right guys, everything seems ok, got my mate to telnet:

220 servername.mydomain.co.uk Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at Tue, 23 Dec 2008 22:27:58 +0000

checked also - i cant even send/recieve emails from myself internally - so obv somthing wrong with internal config......any ideas?

Ok next test.

Go back there.

Telnet to port 25, and follow this:

220 example.local Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.1830 re
ady at Mon, 29 Dec 2008 13:09:31 +0000

Type:

HELO

and you should get
250 example.example.local Hello [ip adress]

Type:

MAIL FROM: [email protected]

You should get:
250 2.1.0 [email protected] OK

Type:
rcpt to:[email protected]

You should get:
250 2.1.5 [email protected]

Type:
data

You should get:
354 Start mail input; end with .

Type:
test test test
. (this is a full stop on a line on it's own)

You should get
250 2.6.0 Queued mail for delivery

and an email in the inbox.

The mail address you use needs to be valid in Exchange.

That looks like your AD DNS cannot resolve external names.

You need to set a forwarder in your DNS config to point it at your ISP's DNS. Note that as someone else has said, the Ex server must be pointed at your internal DC DNS or it will break.
