Sorry about posting in the wrong area guys....

basically im new to exchange and im just having a play with it

I installed exchange fine, Through my website domain managment, i redirected the email mx records to my server, opened the ports on my router for 110 and 25.

I am not recieving and cannot send e-mails - im not sure what im supposed to do from here, where am i going wrong?

You're just "playing around" with Exchange? Crikey..

Port 110 is no good to you as Exchange only communicates on port 25.

How have you configured your recipient policy? Or haven't you?

just to add im using exchange 2003

Define "named your server the same as your domain"?

I can't get into mine at the moment as I'm converting it to a VM so it's offline.

If you want to "tinker" why not try small business server? A lot more is done for you which means it works.. but you can still look at why.

i've installed exchange onto SBS 2003.

basically i've called my server mydomain.co.uk and i actually have the domain "domain.co.uk"

so when i setup my user its identical to what i already have on the mail server which is [email protected]

when i go into the recipient policy it shows SMTP and its set as "@mydomain.co.uk"

.......when i log on as a user and open outlook it says updating mailbox but never does.

OK now we're getting somewhere. Have you run the connection/internet settings wizard in SBS? Are you using ISA?

No i havent - but i can get on websites on the server and the user PC when logged onto the domain.

Not using ISA.

Edit - cannot get on own domain either - would be useful do know how to fix this too please.

That doesn't mean anything unfortunately. Whenever you do anything on SBS you HAVE to do it the SBS way. Try running the wizard and see what happens.

where do i find this wizard, will this affect anything as i have manually assigned my IP, Gateway and DNS?

The wizard is in Server Management. It won't affect anything if you read each window carefully and configure it properly instead of just clicking "Next" all the time like most people do.

Are you running SBS?

yup SBS 2003

First of all, got to someone else's house and PC and telnet your home IP address on port 25.

You should get something like this:

220 example.example.local Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.1830 re

ady at Tue, 23 Dec 2008 17:25:20 +0000

That tests basic connectivity from the outside world.

The window you mention sounds like the "Configure Your Server" windows which is replaced by "Server Management" in SBS2003. Do you have "Server Management" anywhere on the start menu?

my mates seem to be struggling to im off to try it out myself - be back soon.

You will also need to configure smtp properly to stop you becoming an open smtp relay.

Too right. I have feeling 2003 isn't open by default, but I'm not certain as it's been a while since I installed it.

Should be safe with 2003.

220 servername.mydomain.co.uk Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at Tue, 23 Dec 2008 22:27:58 +0000
