Worse economy unchipped

Featured Replies

"Bloody hell!" Thats all I can say. Trying to drag 205/40s around with a standard TDI's power is proving tough. I'm needing to floor it a lot more often to get the thing going and I guess this is having the negative effect on the economy. Dunno what %% it's dropped, won't until end of the week, but the computers been telling me I'm using a bit more on the motorway. :(

I can't wait to be chipped again, because the car seemed to able to haul ass better with the bigger torque level - I guess it needed less flooring it to get it moving. Roll on 4/9/04 when I hope to be back chipped again!

:( How would the tyre size make any difference  , isn't it the lack of power compared to how it was that you are feeling ?

The wider tyres create more friction (hence more grip which is useful when you have more power) and present a greater surface area to the oncoming wind, increasing wind resistance and drag.

This means it will take more energy to reach and maintain the speed than a car with standard wheels and tyres will. More energy requires more fuel so the ecomony goes down.

I don't know why the remap helps the ecomony as well as the power, but it would be interesting to see the economy figures for the remap on standard wheels and the bigger ones.

Quick question - how do I turn off my scientific mode? :P

I see (I think) - thank you. :)

To turn off scientific mode :

1. Get up

2. Go to kitchen

3. Open fridge

4. Extract beer

5. Open beer

6. Drink beer

I recommend beer (see the avatar ;) )

It's been proven time & time again. Sensible driving on a re-mapped car produces better economy.

Less throttle use may be part of the equation..

Thanks

I see Jane attended the same Higher Education establishments as me

Put an extra few PSIs in the tyres...will reduce the friction in the short term until you get the chip sorted... :)

Rob.

Jason (devonutopia) needs as much friction from his tyres as possible, not less ;)

Nooo...less friction means the tyres will slide rather staying stuck to the road and the car rolling... ;)

Jason, try being in the States. We rented a Ford Taurus, and the thing drank petrol like it was going out of fashion! I think we recorded an average mpg of 12.3! If I only had my Diesel over here! Diesel in Phoenix right now is currently $175.9 a gallon, which I think is about 25p a litre!

If that's the exchange rate, it's time to buy some expensive stuff from the US ;)

Good exchange rate I'd agree! I actually meant $1.759 but I think you got that!
