Stereo coming on with ignition......any tips?

Featured Replies

Well after soaking up the success of fitting my car stereo - first time ever :thumbup: - I am now wanting to make it as good as possible. Any suggestions on how to connect it to the ignition so it comes on when I turn the key/turns off when I turn off the engine?

There was a male/female socket thingy, then two mangled chunks of wires with black casing on the end that matched two mangled chunks of wires with black casing in the actual car. Stereo works absolutely fine apart from having to turn it on when I get in the car.

Actually, I haven't checked if it resets when I turn it off - might have to have a look at that too.

Any suggestions please? Ta :D

Connect one of the plus leads to the ignition lead at the ignition lock. (Mostly its the yellow one)... Be careful not to mix up ignition lead with permanent positive because if you do this your settings will be lost if you switch of the ignition.

I used this setting for 3 weeks, but I hated it!

I use to switch of the car at traffic lights, so the radio was switched off every time. Also it is not good for the battery and the engine start. I would recommend to get used to switch manually!

swapping yellow and red wires usually brings the radio so it comes off & on with the switched live in the ignition. :) It also keeps the memory of where you are on the CD

Just replied in your other thread saying well done!

As for what you want, trust me and just use the on/off button as there going to be times when you will want silence (apart from engine noise etc...) but can I understand why you want would such a feature.

Good luck either way :)

yes that is true on most late vw's jason, but the felicia doesn't have a switched live in the radio iso loom, you need to take it from the fusebox or ignition switch, or if you are really daring from the diagnosis connector

You only really need to bother if having problems with battery getting drained. On most stereos there shouldn't be a problem if turned off or face is removed. If modifying wiring make sure it's well insulated.

Well it saved the settings - drove it on the Bypass for the first time this evening  If it's a case of messing with wiring I will get used to turning it on/off - thanks for your tips. Am treating myself to a Haynes Manual tomorrow - OMG, how sad am I?!

Worth getting, or do I just get the Haynes Manual?! :rubchin:

I've got one of these cds for Peugeot cars and I found it to be rubbish compared to a Haynes manual. Only good for finding out part numbers really.

don't have a radio yet :(, but i also turn the engine off at traffic lights so to the switch would not work for me, i like to have my head unit's light turn on with my car lights, also i always take a cable direct from the battery

if you still want to turn the radio off with the switch just tap into the thickest yellow wire you find under the dashboard(test it first) and connect it to the red wire in the head unit, and the yellow wire from the head unit connect it to a constant 12v or direct to the battery the blue with white goes to the signal of your amp (if you have one) and the orange black goes to the light switch

let me know if you have different color cu's i couldn't find the JVC model you posted so i looked for a more o less modern jvc unit

Sorry, think I gave the wrong code name - it's a JVC KD-LHX 551 - comes with a little remote control that the girls fight over in the back of the car  I think I'm going to leave the wires alone - I'm just being a lazy so-and-so and am perfectly capable of turning it on myself! :P

Instead of getting used to switching it on/off, get your girls to do it so much better that way

Heck no, next thing I'll be having to consider their point of view and give them a say in the music!!!:rofl::rofl:

mmm.. i just imagine myself in that situation "honey i love you, but if you put a boy band, Britney (or some other i have in a black list) i'll have to institutionalize you with sting Les Paul and Dave Mustain"

of course, they wont understand and i'll simply reply "there's music, and then theres something else that people call music and just rots your neurons"

again the girl wouldn't understand and i'll say to they're little confused faces " just play some instrumentals " jajajaja

PMSL!!! I would love to hear more about what's on the "banned" list!! :P

PMSL!!! I would love to hear more about what's on the "banned" list!! :P

well, electronic music is mostly out, but Björk, Frou Frou(and now Imogen Heap), Paul Van Dyk and Rachel Starr are always welcome

80's Rock is welcome unless is rod steward (i'm just not gay enough) and i do like Brian Adams

90's music has to be filtered but are welcome (i pay very big attention to the lyrics and what the song is about)

if you play Rap for 10 seconds you will hear a violent scream coming from me saying "PLEASE STOOOOOP!!!!"

the new style of music Reggaton is baned for life, and in that category all musics that talk about sex as a sport or about how hip or cool a singer is, (do you realy want to spend time listening to some bloak with an over inflated ego saying how delirious he is, cus comon, anyone that thinks he's the best must be with a loose nuts somewhere)

girly songs and children song are welcome just as long as they accept to listen to jazz and classical every Sunday and they only have to listen to 10% (1 jazz or classical son for every 10 girly or children song) and if its feature on a walt Disney flic, turn on the volume (i remember how much i enjoyed the little mermaid because of the songs. don't know how old i was) and i will actually learn the lyrics so i can sing along with them...

Gay artist are band, i don't mind gay people, just don't want them until my girls (or boys) are old enough to understand what the anus is for

Madonna pre-child are all baned (i don't like her lest go party and no commitment point of view in the songs, thats all, but the later ones after she got pregnant do have healthy idealisims) exept like a pray, and the other one i cant remember...

if you put on Maria Carey the deck will self destruct....

i guess that can give you a basic idea... jejeje

my cousin a little 4.9 girl (i'm 6.2") gave me a ride one day, a couple of years ago, and as i was shuffling through her cd i started to trow a couple of them out out of the windows.

when she asked what i was doing i told her, thoughing away the trash, when she notices it was her cd's she almost had a fit and i just raised my finger and said "trust me, i'm doing you a favor" guess i had a funny way of saying it, cu's she laughed so much she missed the light going green and got honked at... that made her laugh more, i just replyed "let me know when you pee, so i can get the towel..." she hand signed "get them"

joyous day... din't know you could have so much fun throwing Frisbees out of a car (jejej her maria carey colection with back street boys)

that's the only good thing that i can say about maria...

Ahhh the joy of MP3s - one CD instead of numerous! :P

A friend of mine uses a mp3-DVD... THIS is great but you have to search long for one special song!

have my eye on one that doesn't even take cd's, just SD memory and USB memory sticks, at 512 mb and more, its way better than a cd (and they don't skip or scrach and you can re-record them)

I did have one that used a memory stick but my eldest daughter stole the memory stick to put her homework on - pah, talk about squewed priorities!!

she did not steal it, she "appropriated it" and thats what family does. is not sharing, is "whats mine is yours" and that very big in Dominican Culture...

way to go eldest

not necessarily most have directories if you organize a DVD as Party mode, Soft mode etc.. and put folders in it is not so hard to hear what you want

on the cd era i had a coding method for cd's; hard music would have a anvil drawn in it, softies would have a pillow, and date music would have a 4 leafed clover (Getting lucky) jajaja and party mix where always the same, blank (cu's i always like to change the music mix and give it away to a friend or another)

that way i would have to read anything and still listen to what i wanted
