Should I buy this Octavia?

Featured Replies

Been to look at a 05 plate Octavia this morning & am in two minds whether to commit.

Its an 05 Elegance with 95k on the clock, has full skoda history with about 5 or 6 stamps in the book, cambelt changed at 80k - There are a couple of points that were putting me off though, namely

1. The handle to open the bonnet was missing, the salesman said the workshop would look into it.

2. A small dent on the wheel arch about the size of a 50p

3. Various small scratches (spose thats normal)

4. No CD for the MFD2, also the screen seems a little scratched

5. Service light came on on startup, salesman said it probably needs resetting

6. The interior is fairly dirty. the fronf passenger seat is heavily stained & the roof lining has been solashed with it looks like tea or something.

7. Heres the biggie - I put a deposit down on a VW passat the other day (£100) a 55 reg new shape 1.9 SE in Black with 73K miles, has a scuff on the rear bumper and a cracked windscreen but seemed good value at £4900. This is 200 miles away from home though and would cost me £100 to go pick it up

Other than that The Skoda looks ok - It drives lovely, he is looking for £4400 but would probably come down to £4200 for cash. I would be grateful for peoples opinions on the above, any advice about the faults on the skoda? I will obviously loose my deposit on the VW too.

Thanks,

Paul.

Sounds a lot of money to me for what it is. It's truly a buyers market at the moment and you'd be amazed what sorts of cars can be got for around the £5000 mark. You've not mentioned what the engine is in the Octy.

For example - a very quick search on tinterweb shows at least 2 Octy Classics with sub 30k miles for less than £4800, and with a little bargaining probably sub-£4500. Granted they are petrols (I am guessing the one you're considering is a diesel) but for the 70k lowed mileage I would reckon they were a far sounder bet, and likely to cost considerably less to run over the next 3 years, regardless of mileage.

Sorry, its a 1.9TDi, also seen a 55 plate 1.6petrol for £3875 with 85K miles. I thought sub 100k was low for these engines (1.9TDi).

I'd walk away from the Octy you've described. All thoughs things would put me off.

And how would it cost £100 to get the passat home ? Where's home and where's the passat ?

Windscreen you can get done on your insurance.... the scuff might be fixable via a chips away type person.

Im in Sheffield & the VW is in Basildon - I need to pick it up over the next couple of days but have to work now until Tuesday so I would need to loose a nights pay plus Train fare which probably amounts to approx £160.00

I'd walk away from the Octy you've described. All thoughs things would put me off.

.

I agree! Sounds seriously dodgy to me!

Especially don't like the answer to number 5. - It doesn't need resetting, it needs servicing! If they can't get the bonnet up (number 1) then how have they done it?

At that price number 6 should be sorted by a full valet

Would the Octy be any good without the faults mentioned? I was just thinking - The CD for the Nav, I could download? The Dent - £50, The interior - a bit of elbow grease? The Bonnet Release & Service light maybe they would fix etc etc.

To be honest I'm not seeing any similar specced cars for the same money ie MFD2 - Maxi-dot display etc. + It did feel a nice drive (First time in a skoda btw).

Haha - you won't find many on here who DON'T think the Octy is a good car! But I agree with others that the car sounds a little dodgy, and the guy selling needs to get it serviced before he considers letting it out of the door. There are so many out there that it's worth hanging on for a decent one, especially as you have good money to spend.

Don't think you'd be able to download the programme for the MFD2 - they need a disc in to work.

And if the interior is dirty, makes you wonder how the rest of the car has been looked after, IMHO.

What about some of these:

Buy a used SKODA OCTAVIA Car - Auto Trader UK

There's a 4x4 1.8T Elegance with 12 months MOT with 58k miles for £3,000

Or a 1.9 TDI with 61k miles for £4,000 etc … etc …

All in and around Sheffield. They're not as new as the one you looked at but less miles and cheaper. Either way, you've got to buy an Octavia now.

HTH

steer clear, it sounds ragged, bagged, and sh@gged

Sounds good - any piccies? Is it a Mk II?

Oops!!! - sorry. We live and learn:D

Look on the report on Piston Heads forum in the "Gassing" section. If you look at the latest auction report you'll see an Elegance tdi estate 19000m Bid up to £7.5k I think for what was a nearly new immaculate looking car.
