Spark Plug Wrench & Socket Sizes

Featured Replies

Just a quick question I could see answers to elsewhere. Need to pick up a spark plug wrench (probably from halfords ) to change the set of plugs on a mk1 vRS at the weekend.

Any recommendations which make the job a little easier?

Get a proper 10mm plug box with a 1/2" square drive.

When fitting new plugs, spin them down finger tight (using the box and an extension piece if required) then angle-tighten 30deg (alloy head) or 90deg (iron head).

Ive got the 150pcs (iirc) Halfords Pro tool kit, which has a 10mm Spark Plug socket in and fits the VRS perfectly :) The bores are not deep on the VRS, so only a small extension is required :)

Get halfords professional tools, very little difference between them and mac/snap on (they are lifetime) and much cheaper. Don't bother with anything that's not pro, or at least that's my view.

I think you will find you will need 16mm socket. I use a spring 'grab' tool to remove and insert them, compressed air to clean the threads/holes & copper grease on the first 5 threads of the new plugs to stop expensive seisure. Nip them up with 1 finger, they will then turn a further 1/4-1/2 turn as it flattens the washer. Do NOT overtighten past this point!

Greg.
