Changing battery in the key

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone know if can change battery in your car key without reseting the memory? I've done it on my previous Mondeo without any problems.

Can anyone help please?

Cheers

David

You shouldn't have any trouble if you're quick enough. And even if the worst comes to the worst you will lose the remote central locking (not immobilizer) functionality. If you have both keys you will be able to reprogram this yourself without visiting the dealer.

This is an easy job. Put the key fob in a moderately warm place to soften the plastic latches, then flip open the key and insert a screwdriver blade into the slot revealed. With a bit of manipulation, the fob will separate into two halves. The battery change technique is obvious and it takes a CR2032 lithium cell. It would be advisable to swap the cells fairly quickly to avoid loss of coding, but I have had no problems with this.

Why on earth this job is not included in the vehicle service schedule is beyond me...

No problem, I'm sure you'll be fine. In the unlikely event (I sound like an airline announcement) that you have any trouble, report back and I'll look up the recoding process.

Thanks mate! When I was changing the battery in my old Mondeo it was straight swap (if done within 20 second), so I'm hoping this to be similar. Will buy a new battery on my way from work and will give it a go once I'm home ... just to make sure I have the spare key :-)

Bought battery CR2032 and swap was really that easy as rotodiesel described ... however I still need to go and stand literally next to the car for that key to work. Any ideas?

Any ideas?

Broken antenna wire on car? I remember something about extending this under one of the front seats if necessary.

Does the other (spare) key perform better?

Well it doesn't! Actually I swap my keys a few months back. The second key which was still brand new is working the same. Thought it was due to battery being old, but no change with the new battery.

Isn't there some battery in the actual receiver in the car?

Thanks,

David

Not that I know of, just the car's main battery. I assume that your keys only have one battery, not two seperated by a conducting plate?

I don't think there are two batteries. At least I couldn't see the second one anywhere. It's getting really annoying that I have to stand literally next to the driver's door to open/lock the car :-(

Keys only have one cell, car only uses main battery.
