Vagcom how to?

Featured Replies

Hi.

Having terrible probs with my mums Octy Tdi.

I have the link cable to my laptop but need to reset the idle on this car and alter the timing (the ecu has retarded the timing I think)

So,whats the cheapest way to get this set up?

I've exhausted every other avenue with this (see tdi stalling) and now need vagcom to see what needs doing.

Help!!!!!!!!

The timing is set in the ecu and is not adjustable in the way you mean. The idle speed is also set. It sounds like you have problems and need to get a scan and I agree you need vagcom/use of it to see what is happening, but it's not a 'tuneup' as these vehicles do not require adjustment in that sense.

The static pump timing has to be adjusted, but is unlikely to be causing your issues. Also check out the case pressure relief valve to see if it needs pressing back together.

It is possible to adjust the timing with VAG-COM, i have done this for someone who wanted to increase their MPG on a Octavia MKI TDi.

This was using a genuine Ros Tech cable BTW (not sure if it's possible on a ebay cable)

judgeyc what cable and software are you using?

I just bought a cable.

The main question is where could I purchase the software to be able to adjust the timing?

Ref earlier answer, what is this pressure thingy? How would I check it?

Again thanks a lot for taking your time to answer, much appreciated.

You can't adjust the timing like Greg has quite rightly said with VAG COM. You can check the dynamic timing and adjust by means of altering the pump if its a TDi rather than a PD.

You can use an adaptation, to take it AWAY from correct timing, by putting in an advance or retard offset (by offset, it will increase whatever amount you set across the rpm/load range). I use this on dual fuel vehicles to give a little more advance to suit the lower cetane vegoil, but it should not normally be played with. It can cause head gasket failure from over advance, noisy running & other issues.

Like Lummox said the only thing you need to do from a service point of veiw is set the static timing and fix any problems, the ecu is built to automatically tune the timing to the correct adjustment and a) it's not advisable to change that setting B) it's not a fix for a fault. The car should be running 100%, a bit like if you car won't start you don't go and put a bigger turbo in, you don't need to modify these settings to get the car running 100% you need to find the fault and go fix it.

If it's not idling right, there is something wrong and it will need fixing mechanically. The cable is an aide to guide you where you need to work.

How about posting the fault codes from the engine if any are now available, or more complete symptoms of the problems you are having?

This reason for me advancing the timing was for a TDi running on vegoil,, although i agree it is recommended not to adjust anything this way (as you need to make sure the timing is spot on mechanically, i fully explained this to the owner and he was happy to take that 'risk' as the belt had recently been changed and he knew it was all timed up correctly) once you know mechanically it is timed up correctly it is possible to make minor adjustments.

Simply saying VAG COM cannot adjust the timing is incorrect.
