1999 Ovtavia VRS Warm starting problems?

Featured Replies

Hi all, not sure if this is right section.

as above I have a 1999 Octy VRS which i've had about 6 months. I dont think I've had a problem before, but last week during the real cold weather I stopped at parents to pick something up came out, gave normal turn of key and wasnt really listenning and car didnt start.

took bit more notice and turned key and it took maybe 6/7 seconds and I pressed go pedal and it started. seemed to run fine, seemed ok when i got home.

couple of days after this i stopped to get some milk, same thing, took a few more seconds turning over, and this time it was a bit like choke was on, but engine was warm?

its always been fine first thing when engine cold?

I have also noticed i feel like it smokes in the morning for longer than other cars around me? its not oil as checked levels, checked water levels, but started to think maybe i'm not gettign same mpg as i used to? not a lot different i just put it down to me being more used to car and maybe using a bit more right foot, and with cold havign aircon on to demist more?

but could this be lambda or maf or something? i guess i need to find someone with VAG-Com to check?

Allan

I'm thinking more about the coolant temperature sensor that feeds the EMS. You're on the right lines with the VAG-Com check though.

ive been having the same sort of problems for months, just found out its my cat..and thats only cause its started rattling, had it at skoda they said my reserc valve was knackered so bought a new forge 1 and still had the same prob..just a thought..might be worth looking into..

i was getting alot of white smoke..less mpg and somtimes it would laggout when i moved the car before it warmed up and a loss of power sometimes

(Off topic slightly) I thought the vRS model wasn't available until 2001?

lol sorry that was me being a spanner! it is a Y reg 2001 but reg is Y199 and i dunno why but my mind is too simple and i always call it a 1999 car!

could well be cat or exhaust related actually, I have had a bit of a rattle on startup just thought it was a heatshield and would try and have a look if ever got a warm enough day to be crawling about.

I need two tyres soon so will try and get on a ramp when there done

cold might be good to help see if exhaust is blowing anywhere.

I think Ken's suggestion is a good one.

The coolant temp sensor is a common part to fail, takes 2 mins to replace with no tools, and is cheap. So a good place to start.

Also as said you need to get the error codes read, then you can accurately diagnose the fault, without spending money on expensive parts like lambda sensors and cats!

Hi

I would put money on the CTS too

It alters the fuel you see , it is like an automatic choke you see

So it will be thinking the engine is cold when it is warm and could be overfuelling you see

06a 919 501a and make sure it is the green top one

A seal is approx £1

Takes approx 15 to 20 mins to do

Just make sure the engine is cold when you do the job too
