Fogging up, rear wash wipe, twins ! & insurance.

Featured Replies

Rolling a few into one here, due to time constraints !

I've not been on here for almost two months, in fact I noticed my last login was the day before my missus gave birth to our lovely twins...how things have changed ! Even the poor Vrs went 3.5 weeks without a wash initially but it's improved since then !

Anyway, to the matter in hand, I've always had problems with the windows fogging up, an issue that was partially/temporarily resolved after several attempts by the local dealer last year (along with other reoccurring issues).

However the situation has become chronic again recently with the back window in particular dripping with water inside (even if dried off completely). Tonight I noticed the rear screen wash is only going a couple of inches from the arm...and that the inside edge of the tailgate/trim/lock & rubber deal round the boot are all soaking...is this a sign of the dreaded but apparently well know, departed washer hose..and if so, can I fix this myself (not greatly mechanically minded!) or is it another day off the road at the dealers? If it's a trip to the dealers, I'll get the brake fluid service done & a few other issues looked at.

I got a flyer thro' to attend the launch of the new Octavia, but while I like my Vrs, I don't think I could buy another one after the problems encountered & the poor customer service I have been subject to in the year or so I've had it. I am sure there are other dealers that would value my business if I did fancy a change (& could afford it!)

Finally, slightly off topic, but I did a few quotes for the 'twins' new 'taxi' a Mazda 5...which has a set of dealer fit parking sensors fitted to it...the quotes were £40-50 dearer with the sensors that without...surely they are more likely to assist than detract from the safety of the car? Robbers !!!!

On the insurance - it costs them more to repair if you're rear-ended...

I've just got a new VRS estate and am having similar fogging up problems at the moment, and I must say it is a little disappointing on an otherwise superb car.

If there are any quick fix answers out there, or suggestions from anyone who has taken one back to the dealers to be cured I too would be eternally grateful.

Pollen filter???

Have a search on the forum.

Congrats on the twins!!!!

I've had a look around the forum & see there are issues with the pipe detaching...I think it'll be a trip to the dealer to fix, as it's still under warranty.

I'd had fogging up issues from day 1 & apparently it was a flap sticking somewhere?? It did get better, but has worsened again.

It's relatively minor (& should be easy fix faults for the dealer) that take the shine off an otherwise fine motor.

Thanks for the replies...car booked in for a couple of days next week...thought they might as well have a go at fixing it all in one go ! & do a brake fluid change at the same time. At least they seemed aware of the rear wash wipe hose issue !

I am getting a courtesy car, but have to arrange my own insurance, does anyone know if Brentacre will likely do that FOC ?

"Always had problems with the windows fogging up" - not the wains I hope, ;)

Fron sammycarp "On the insurance - it costs them more to repair if you're rear-ended... "

(as a certain Member for Kirkaldy is wont to say -"may I refer you to the last answer")

Best of luck with the new Aberdonians and hope some of their first words are "fit like loon",and they grow up to speak a decent language (something undecipherable to those a bit further south  ).

(To those uneducated Sasenaches thats "what like ,lad "- or "hows it going mate ")

And absolutely indecipherable to us heathen ex-colonials on the other side of the world (but I did get "hows it going mate " )

Rear Sensors are fragile and expensive!! Body shop failed to notice that they were damaged when SWMBO had her Fiat rear ended. I ended up getting them done and charging Insurance co/ Cost £53 +VAT x 4 and about £80 fitting!!

Fur eboots a bank?

On the insurance question, not only will repairs cost more, but there's evidence that some people rely on the sensors and have more reversing shunts as a result!

True. Not just shunts either - my brother reversed his Golf into a 3 ft deep hole. The sensor didn't start beeping until he hit 45 degrees.:D

Thanks for all the replies...less said about the language thing the better I think !

I've had a look & haven't been able to locate the leak (yet!) The car is going in on Mon night, so they can do the legwork...I am also getting numerous other bits looked at while it's in - bonnet lever stays stuck thro' grille after the bonnet is put back down, knocking noise under the gearlever, clutch/engine judder/squeal when under any load, stereo switching itself off (with a bang!)...and it'll get a brake fluid change. I have managed to get them to cover the cost of the insurance...Brentacre wanted £45 !!!!!!

When I saw the guy that sold me the car, I said "I hope you have all this crap sorted out on the new one" & I got the same reply as the last time I asked if he wanted to buy the car back " Oh, they are normally pretty reliable "...to which i replied, "i must have got a Friday car"...needless to say, i didn't take them up on their launch of the new Octavia invite !

Stereo switching itself off with a bang (if it's a Stream) sounds like you need the firmware update to the radio that fixes that problem.

Does sound like you've got some issues there though, I'm no mechanic though so the rest doesn't mean much to me. Here's hoping they get it all fixed for you shortly.

Credit where credit is due...Vrs returned today with the following repairs carried out under warranty - new boot lock, anti roll bar linkage replaced? all doors resealed? & the rear wash wipe reconnected. They also did the requested brake fluid change & washed the car ! + the phoned me to say it was ready before I felt the need to chase them...must be a first !!!!

Hopefully this will be the end of my visits to the dealer for a while (unless I decide to purchase those rear mudflaps - that some suggest will fit with a little persuasion - do we have a timescale to do the fit the rears only?)

On the downside - the courtesy car was a very mucky 08 Fabia diesel - do all the Skoda diesels sound that noisy??? if so I am glad I have the petrol Vrs, even if it is thirsty ! Other than the engine, it was a reasonable/likeable enough car to drive.

They also didn't stamp up my service book with the fluid change, but I do have a receipt to prove it was done - is there any way of physically seeing that it was done?

Looking forward to running the old Vrs again now ! Thanks for the help !

My diesel's pretty whisper quiet, and the dealership make a habit of phoning me after a service earlier than I expected, and charging me less than I expected!

Speaking of dealerships, don't forget to put a message in the Review Centre under Scottish dealers!
