By sweedish, as he can't seem to post in here:

"like the pics so far, engine out already!

Ok will make it simple, the 2ltr 16v is good for around 180(ish) bhp WITH a fair amount of modification ie cams, head work (polish and porting) warm up regulator modification (stealth a vw tuner do this), but all this wont be cheap to do unless you buy a modified 2ltr already, mine is a conversion by oettinger and has had some serious money spent in parts by the previous owner.

Bare in mind 16valvers need lots of revving to work and to get much more power than 180ish is not so easy.

Sooooooo, i would say if around 180 bhp is enough AND you dont want to tune more in the future without considering a turbo conversion and spending lots more (like the golf Limited which runs a 1.8 g60 supercharged 16v lump which is an awesome engine) then get the 16 valver.

If however you want more power than 180bhp (lets face it the reason we all play with our cars is to improve them) then i would get the 20vt engine from an octavia or better still the 225 BAM engine from a tt.

Honestly, if it was me, i would go 20vt all the way, as for pure cost reliability and future tuneability this engine is by far the best way forward. My engine is tuned pretty much as much as possible without losing reliability and without spending a fortune, and as we all know, after a while a fast car seems slow, which is why we always tune.

You can pick up an engine and gearbox with low miles on fleabay for 1200ish (give or take) and you wouldnt need to really tune it other than a remap. If you did want to tune later on, look at the figures some of the guys like Steevie Wonder is getting from his engine, serious power!!!

Now im not saying you need those kind of figures but the potential is always there!

Your choice dude!"

the 2.0 16v is 138 bhp standard isnt it? I think i may stick with the 2.0 with cam/valve change for the start, in the end it will be a show peice, not just the engine being done so need some moneys to spend on the rest of the car too :)

i was going to have it resprayed proffessionally, but i decided against that because i can do it myself for £1000 cheaper, all i need is a weekend in my works yard when the bodywork is good and ready!

2.0 16v ABF tall block engine is 150 bhp.

  • Author

whats the diference between the tallblock and shortblock? is it literally the size of the block?

Yup, longer stroke hence more torques.

  • Author

so would i need much modifying in the engine bay to fit one in? or does it still drop straight in?

Tall block will cause a couple of problems with the manifold hitting the bulkhead if you use a four branch but uses the same mounting points so drops in ok.

I used the passat/corrado 2.0 16v engine code 9a running cams from the 1.8 16v KR in my old mk2 golf.

Pretty easily sorted though.

only needs a bit of a bulge in the bonnet :P

so whats the power on the shortblock? still 150 with less torque?

No it need a bit of a bulge in the exhaust tunnel, bonnet remains the same.

oh right

well if it has to be done it has to be done :)

going back up tomorow to strip the intrerior and remove the wiring loom maybe..

Short block 9a is 138bhp but this is down to 2 things.

1. Later engine so runs a cat unlike the 1.8 16v.

2. Cams were changed to reduce emissions.

I run a standard 2.0 16v short block with 1.8 cams on standard 1.8 k-jet injection system and ecu. Four branch with powerflow exhaust and k&n panel filter made 170bhp but with a good setup and WUR mod it would of been close to 180bhp. It had no problem keeping up with my mates 208bhp leon FR tdi.

so i guess you had a remap then aswell? sounds easier than i thought to get a bit of power out of these engines, i guess i could get an engine and cams out the scrap yard and sort out breathing and not need to worry about tuning in that case. also just had a brainwave, is power steering worth the bother? since i havnt actually drove one of these before (despite now owning one) i dont know if the steerings much of an issue tbh

No need for a remap as the kjet injection system is mechanical and the ecu only controls the advance and retard of the ignition system. Stealth do a WUR (Warm up regulator) modification which basicaly is adjusting the fuel pressures. When i did my 2.0 conversion it took me 6 hours to go from a running 1.8 to a running 2.0.

I have never had a mk2 with power steering and my last one had a small steering wheel with wide wheels. Never bothered me not having power steering.

I've got PAS on both of mine, not essential but nice.

ok then thats settled that, il leave the power steering out.

i want to spray the engine bay aswell as the rest of the car, i cant decide wether to make spraying the next job or not

updates!

got the interior out and wings off today and started smoothing the top bodyline out, rear wiper motor and spray jet removed to be smoothed over and rear window removed

Everything that has come out of the car is for sale, engine, gearbox, interior.

any suggestions?

well been a couple weeks, but i may have found me an engine at last.

1.8 16v gti engine, wiring loom, ecu and ancilleries £150 and service history

good going (Y)

so il be back on the posts again soon.

well, the engine i found hasn't been brought because iv had trouble again with the misses rover. had to replace the engine and after that i ran out of money! so i thought to myself why not just kep the 1.3 engine that was allready in it..

the only reasons not to is that the head gaskets gone and its damn slow in my opinion. but anyway i had the engine round to the works yard and start taking it apart! it was running when i brought it but noisy and damn rough. i decided im going to rebuild it and uprate a few things i.e camshaft, carbs or throttle bodies? if teflon tom or lummox reads this il need many pointers and endless advice!

i know most readers will be thinking "why the hell would he do that for" "why rebuild that engine" "waste of money" but i have absolutely no experince rebuilding engines and the engine is here and i would like to give it a go.

pictures will follow shortly, and more to come later when i get a set of torx bits and take the head off

also i want to change to a 5 speed gearbox, are there any likely problems i will encounter?

well.

took one of the caps off on the main bearings and not even the slightest sign of anywear at all. so il probarbly be doing more harm than good as it turns out on if i rebuild the block so i guess il be leaving that. unfortunatly i forgot to take a picture of it :o

DSC00388.jpg

can anyone tell me about that sort of a ring about 10mm deep from the top of the bore? its like thick oil and when you wipe it off underneath its almost as if its burnt in? probarbly nothing but just wandered because the pistons finish up level with the face of the block so its not as if its where the pistons finish travel

DSC00389.jpg

theres nout wrong with the head either but its covered in thick black sludge in the shape of the bores in the block.. anything to worry about? or should i just put it back together with a full set of gaskets? and clean everything up?

little engine has done 110000 miles nearly i expected a bit of wear and tear! i guess it would be stupid to start rebuilding it..

so in any case can anyone tell me how to clean the engine up properly? should i buy a chemical? or should i use thinners and a wire brush or something??

not much today, just what i did while at work.

thinners and a wire wheel on a 7" grinder.

hoping for the block to come out something like so i can spray it up nice.
