What is the correct offset range for 18" Alloy Wheels?

Featured Replies

Hey all, looking to upgrade to 18" alloy wheels with 225/40/18 tyres now that i've dropped the car 30mm on Eibachs.

Could anyone tell me what the permissable range is on the offset without having to fit spacers?

Many Thanks

18,s very nice

I think i read somewhere that its 35 - 42mm but not 100% on it.Sorry to be a bit vague.Good luck with the wheels.

It is not only the ofset that is important but also the rim width.

I have the dealer fit B14 18" rims that are 8J and ET45 with 225/45 18 tyres; they fit fine. I wouldn't want to go much less on the ofset IMHO.

OE Zeniths are IIRC 7.5J and ET54 (so sit more inboard than my B14s). I recall Tom vRS tried using 20mm spacers with 18" Zeniths effectively making them ET34 and they rubber the wheel arches at the rear (front are less of a problem).

I have also has 17" Peagasus that are 7J and ET54 running with 15mm spacers, effectively making them ET39 and they were fine too; but remember that a 7J rim will be about 12mm less outward than an 8J rim of the same offset.

Have a look here, to help you calculate what you can do;- Wheel Offset Calculator

Helpful or confused?

I understand what your getting at matey. Im not looking to stretch the sidewalls, maybe slightly...if i cant get away with it.

I've got no idea what Offset and rim width im already on, im running 17" RS4 Copies at the moment (what came with the car)

There's no scrubbing at the moment even with a full tank and a few items in the boot.

Was looking at the VW R212 Copies that come up on ebay, they look as if they come off of a Mk5 Golf R32?

I just cant make my mind up what i want, may even be tempted by 19's ;)

Maybe up for sale, if i get a new set. Just cant decide as to what to get.

The Zeniths have a ET51 at 7.5" ;)

With 8" the safest ET will be up to about 44-42 no less.

At ET35 you can have trouble with the rear lashes, but not all octavias have this trouble. This is due to the tolerances in built.

I tried ET35 at 8" but it did touch the rear lashes. Driving the BBS VZ033 with ET44 at 8", I have no trouble at all. They are legalised here in Germany by the TÜV.

I agree with magic62; 8J ET42 is about the lowest you can safely go.

Is this with lowering coming into the equation also?

The car its self is down on 30mm Eibach Prolines.

With the aforementioned ET you will be safe, no matter how much you lower the car. ;)

A quick question regarding the PCD now if you dont mind?

What is it on a Mk2 Octy? 5 x 112?

Yepp, 5 x 112 hubdiameter 57.1mm

18" alloy wheels with 225/40/17 tyres

I'd pay money to watch a tire fitter getting those tires onto those rims :P

Ahahaha! Smart Rse!

Just spotted that now you mentioned it, was like wtf had to go back and recheck myself.

Anyone fitted spacers with 18" Zeniths, the arches need filling just a little bit more

If you want to be safe, purely mathematical a 15mm spacer should do fine.

That is 30mm pro axle.

(8" is 6.35mm more to one side than 7.5" and from ET51 to ET42 another 9mm)

Hi all, Sorry to labour a point - I'm just getting to grips with figures! I'm looking to get a set of 18x8J on my standard Octy mk1 VRS (estate) - I would love a set of Dare Evo 328's - but I don't think they come in 8J, or a set of Nuvolari's - but they might be the wrong ET.

Dare:- http://www.rimstyle.com/data/products/types/dare_evo_328_mb/xlarge/1.jpg

Nuvolari:- http://i17.ebayimg.com/04/i/001/26/75/bda5_12.JPG

When you say '42mm' is the lowest you can go.. Does that mean 'nearest to the hub'? Thus a higher number, 54mm for example would be considered lower..ie closer?

So, if I chose the wheels above on my motor, 35-42mm would fit absolutely fine with no scrubbing or arch fouling? If I play safe and get 35 will I guarantee a fit?

My car isn't lowered. I'll no doubt buy online, so I want to be sure.

and last question.. I have Falken 452's on my current 16"ers that will go up for sale shortly after buying the new wheels (loads of tread too)

I am led to believe 225/40/18 is the correct rubber config for my motor?

Thank you all very much.. expect a bargain sale as thanks for dependable info'!

Great forum!

Dood.

I'm ever sooo sorry, having searched for this thread.. I neglected to note it was in the Octy MK2 forum.. please slap me, but an answer would be cool nevertheless.. cheers!

No; lowest numerical figure i.e. ET35 is too low

Thus a higher number, 54mm for example would be considered lower..ie closer?

Higher ET figure brings the wheel inboard; lower is outboard.

as you have realised this is the Octy II forum - bluntly, I haven't a clue about the offset for the Octy I - except that it might be worth browsing are here;- Skoda Octavia 97> 18" Alloy Wheels Search - Alloy Wheels - Specialist supplier of alloy wheels and tyres packages, Fast Delivery, Buy Online where ET30 to ET45 is recommended.

as above recommneded

Good luck.

PS> sorry but don't like either of the wheels you're thinking of; sorry.

Thank you so much! I'll take a look at the link now. - I admire your honesty! I was actually thinking the Nuvolari may look better all one colour as opposed to having the black sections..Thus: http://europeanautoclinic.com/Gallery/albums/European-Autos/Audi_Nuvolari_Concept_1_1024x768.jpg
