Fitting original xenon

Featured Replies

Well, the problem is following ...

Because original parabolic headlights are (no offense to other owners, and with all the respect to skoda), simply crap, i am thinking of buying original xenon headlights, from czech republic (Octavia II | Exteriér | ALPA-Auto - Úpravy seda?ek & prodej originálních dopl?k? voz? ?koda), which comes at a resionable price (360€).

But i assume that i need some other stuff like some sensors on rear axle (for proper automatic hight control).

I won't bother yet with the headlights washing system yet.

So the question is, what else should i need, and what are the prices expected. And of course, how hard it is to make everything work ...

Thanks for answers!

They will be a LHD car (not sure where you live) so if they are to go into a RHD car you will probably have problems at the MOT (the 'tourist levers' only 'flat beam' the lights)

You will also need the xenon bulbs and probably the ballast boxes to go with them.

Finally they will need to be set up with VCDS.

Isn't there a leaver that switches them from LHD to RHD ?

They are the 'tourist lever',all it does is flat beams the light so the kick up (on the left of a RHD car) does not blind oncoming traffic when driving on the right.

Dammed .. i have got lost in all of those abbreviations :)

LHD? RHD? VCDS?

Sorry about my bad technical knowledge .. especcially with english expressions .. :worried:

About MOT - i live in Slovenia, and i have learned that for road legal xenons i they have to have cleaning mechanism, and self-leveling system ...

oh ok .. now i got it .. RHD, LHD ... right hand drive .. yes :)

Am .. i'm from LHD country yes ..

The lights will be fine then, i would check with the supplier if the ballast's or bulbs come with the lights (unlikely).

VCDS (or VAG-COM as is used to be called) is a diagnostic cable and software made by Ross Tech this is needed to enable the xenon's on your car, it might be worth asking a Skoda dealer if he will do this for you?

Don't be tempted with the cheap eBay VAG-COM cables - these do not work on the MKII Octavia.

Oh, ok VAG-COM, i know that yes :)

Well i have some connections with one skoda dealer so i think that should not be the problem.

So the ballast that u re talking about is actually the sensor for proper auto-hight control of the light beam?

The best way to install HID in Octavia II is using a headlight units from Octavia Scout with HID kit.

They have lenses for dipped beam, they have fully compatible connector, and the manual leveling from the dash will continue to work as usual.

So the ballast that u re talking about is actually the sensor for proper auto-hight control of the light beam?

No, the ballast boxes (one per bulb) are the things that up the power so the bulbs ignite, (there is more to them than that, but thats roughly what they do)

My ballasts are built into the headlamp assembly as a single unit.

No separate boxes (the unit is plug and play compatible in a mechanical sense - just clicks onto mounting table in front wing. I pressume it is plug and play in an electrical sense aswell as the plug appears identical to the non-xenons)

Of course this still leaves the issue of the washers and leveller sensors (which I thought fitted to the front suspension) - and possibly vagcom to mate units to car ecu.

Oh .. well the ballast boxes are built in to the headlight itself ...

well yes, that's the information i was looking for - how is it with leveller sensors? Is it hard to install, and are they expensive?

VRS195 - have u also installed the washers or not?

Sorry if my reply was misleading, I have not fitted the xenons myself (the lights, washers and level sensors were all fitted as factory options).

I know what the back of my lights look like as someone backed into my car and hit the light unit. No damage, but the unit directional adjustment "table" that the unit clips onto was misaligned.

So I had to pull the light unit out, rotate the table back to correct direction and refit unit (the table has a toothed axle to rotate light unit 5 degrees or so at a time).

(about five mins works)

Here are the instructions to remove front lamps (thanks Stu, erm again!)
