Just pull your Sky card out and try it :)

If you want the electronic programme guide, then you will need to pay Sky £10/month, otherwise it will only work manually.

almost right,

if you cancel your sky sub, then you will lose all recording capability on the box. This includes both manual and scheduled recordings, and you will not be able to access any of the recorded programs either. It is possible to retain these functions, but you will need to pay sky £10 per month to keep the plus functionality.

You can still access the EPG but will not be able to record/watch anything in the planner.

Another alternative is to buy a Humax HDR freesat recorder, apart from the purchase cost there is no additional outlay.

The Humax is a very good piece of kit :)

I looked at the Humax, but as I already had a Sky HD box, it would have been well over 2 years of the £10 subscription to recover the cost of the new HD recorder box. If you didn't already have Sky+ then it would be an easier choice in my opinion.
