HPC Young Drivers Day 2009

Featured Replies

The annual HPC Young Drivers Day is running again this year and is based in Oxfordshire on the 1st August 2009. Cost for the day was £30 per person last year which covers hiring of the conference rooms, all-day tea/coffee and lunch so I expect it to be in that ballpark again this year.

It's aimed at those under 26 and priority will be given to those who haven't been before. However, saying that, there were a couple of free places due to people dropping out in the last few days last year, so it's well worth being on the reserve list if you don't fulfil those criteria ;)

I'd love to do this again. Will get myself registered :)

If you just keep saving the £30s, Tom, you could do it for real :D

Not sure how familiar you are with the Club, but essentially the driving standard is based on the Police system (aka Roadcraft) and the idea of the day is to show that there's a bit more to driving than just passing the L-test at 17/18.

The format of the day tends to be about 1/3 seminar (to cover the theory) and then 2/3 driving and she'll have the opportunity to be driven by and drive with two coaches during the day. The coaches don't really have a syllabus to work to for the day, but I try and pick a couple of areas where changes in approach can be very marked and do a bit of work on them. Cornering seems to be a firm favourite

So the main aim of the day is to have fun and maybe learn something along the way. Enthusiasm for driving and becoming a better driver is the order of the day

Just booked up a fortnight in Turkey - so its back on the back burner - but will get there one day of that I am sure!

can you please tell me will i be taken out in my car on the normal road or is it at an airfield??? just trying to gauge the day really dont want to make a tit of myself but think i should go now im running the vrs and my ability isnt the best

Can I bring my bus? :P

Would be a good day i reckon but not sure I would really gain much from it...

Phil

As I understand it, it would be purely road driving.

Phil - are we to understand you're already a driving god? :P

Lol.. not saying that but I think I am a pretty good driver and have driven busses for a couple of years and now driving, what is basically, a mobile classroom in the form of a bus to many tight school and college sites.

Honestly mate, this is a different ball game ;)

Yeh suppose if its using the police driving techniques will be a lot of advance driving in there etc.

Will see how I'm set and might put meself down.

So is it in our own cars then?

Phil

Hang on... just realised... can I really be bothered driving all that way!!! lol

Yes.

Last year was an hour or so classroom, demo drive in an observers car, drive out in your car, dinner. Repeat in the afternoon. :)

if your like any of the bus drivers ive seen then yes you should go on this.( because most are crap drivers) ..because you drive a bus that makes you a good driver:rofl:

sorry to sound rude ...:o

Tell me about it! most bus drivers I know are crap drivers too! Always in such a rush all the time just to go and sit at a bus stop for 10 minutes ans wait there time!

Besides I have to be a good driver in my bus other wise I throw everything around in my kitchen cupboards! lol

Would love to do this and would no doubt get something out of it if not just an enjoyable day but thinking about it its just a bit too far to travel tbh.

Just catching up on this thread....

Yes, the day is purely road driving and you will drive your own car and then be driven in an HPC member's car. If you want, you can insure them on your car but you'd need to talk to the organiser about that and see if both parties were keen on it. Ultimately, when you're driving your car, you are in control and responsible for how you drive and the coach is just there to make suggestions which you can try, ignore or challenge :D

If you attend the day, you may then be invited to an off-road day at one of the big proving grounds later in the year...

In answer to Phil's point, you may well have nothing to learn and be a great driver, but you won't know unless you come along (rooms are available in the hotel or there are travel inns, etc in the locality too ;) ) If you do have nothing to learn, you might get honorary membership :D

Phil - if you can, do it :) A great opportunity...

I'd love to go again, I went on the 2007 day. Will see how I'm fixed for that day. TBH, I'd hoped to have done additional training since the last day, but time constraints have made this difficult :( Must try harder....
