Wheel refurbishing in Ireland

Featured Replies

Anyone know of a good place to get wheels sprayed.

I had mine damaged before and I got a place in Maynooth to repair them, only problem is now the paint is coming off.

Also would a set of Golf wheels fit the Octavia, a friend has a set he could lend me while mine are getting fixed.

Maybe with a few modifications Colm

Colm as long as they clear the caliper they should be fine for a few days 5x100 pcd is standard VW afaik, check em on the front first to be sure... as for somewhere to refurb, there is a guy in Cabra just over the little bridge on the ratoath rd Cambells garage who advertises refurbs, dunno how good though,id say if its just painting they need, no alloy welding etc then any decent paintshop should be able to sort them out for ye...

Cheers

Problem is they have all been sprayed by the same place and I'm afraid that there is more paint ready to come off the others, so if they are sprayed over again then it'll come off.

What would need to be done to them to prep them for painting.

Sand blasted or dipped to remove all paint, grease etc, but most reputable paint shops would do this anyway, no point putting good paint over bad as you've siad

I think thats probably what the guy did who last sprayed them.

The old paint needs to come off by sandblasting, then have the wheel redone using powder coating so you get a more even finish that should stay stuck. And wheels from the golf mk4 should go straight on, as do the wheels from the Audi TT and Seat Leon.

Would I be right in saying that when the alloys come from the factory, the silver is a powder coating with a laquer over them ?

To be honest I'd say the guy that done them for me probably just sprayed over the whole lot, after filling in the scratches (he done it for 20 Euro a wheel).

Is it just the layer of paint that he put on which has to come off or do they have to be brought right back to the bare metal and remove the factory powder coating. Then when the powder coating is put back on do they have to be laquered again.

I'm probably going to have to get all 4 wheels done, as the paint will probably end up coming off on them all. To get an idea of the price, what does work like this cost in England ?

Would it damage the wheel, that has had the paint come off to leave it for a while before getting it fixed. I assume the powder coating is still underneath.

AFAIK powder coating is applied electricaly so should be there for life, Sand blasting though would most likely remove it, paint and filler (previous repairs maybe) from the wheels so the scrathes gouges etc would have to be repaired again... if you plan on getting them done then it wont do any harm to leave em as is for a while... there is also a crowd up north that do this (cant remember name at mo) I have seen uk prices for refurb at

Or I suppose I could get the guy who filled in the scratches to spray them again...........don't know how long it'll last though.

How about a year and a half ? :(

When I bought my car it had gold wheels, which the dealer kindly resprayed in silver for me (part of the purchase agreement). A year and a half later the wheels are starting to flake around the badges, and lo and behold what shines underbeath? Yes, gold paint. I've now taken them to a proper shop (thanks fab16v!) where they are completely redone.

Quinten,

Did they just spray them or did they get Sandblasted & Powder coating.

The garage did the former, the proper shop does the latter... if not, I'll be knocking on their door in a year and a half with big k's hammer ;)

How much did the latter cost to get done ?

Give the Tyre Safety Centre up north a ring 04886762528 there in Cooktown.
