Electric Mirror Problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

When I bought my car last week I noticed the electric mirror switch knob had broken off, I managed to source a new switch from someone here on Briskoda.

I installed the switch I had been sent and it only controlled the left mirror, so I swapped the switch with the original and just moved the knob over, again it only controls the left mirror. Interestingly the rear drivers side door central locking does not work either.

I know the car before I bought it had a bump on the rear on the left hand side, but not sure if that explains why the right mirror and central locking doesn't work properly.

It doesn't matter if the electric mirror switch is in the L or R position, either position controls the left hand mirror only.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Jon

The mirror operation is correct except that the driver side mirror isn't working. Both mirrors should operate in the R position and just the left in the L position

Given that the car has had a bump, then you need to take off the driver side door panels to what is going on in there.

It could be damaged mirror motors, wiring or it could also be the electronics box which is an integral part of the driver side window motor. This box controls the door lock, mirror, mirror heater, window, etc. If this is the case then you would need a driver door window motor.

The same applies to the rear door.

Does the door lock switch on the driver armrest panel lock/unlock all the doors?

If you set the switch to the demist position do both mirrors heat up?

Your problem does sound electrical rather than mechanical.

Thanks for the replies, will start with Lex first, my car doesn't have a demist position on the switch it just has L - O - R. On my car, the SLXi, I think the heated mirrors come on when you use the rear heater mirror switch. But to test this, if I touch the mirrors should they be warm/hot ?

Onto rwbaldwin, ah ok, I never knew that's how it operated, never had a Skoda before or in fact electric mirrors before lol. My manual however says that L is for left mirror and R is for right mirror,l my car is 1999 so not sure if there is an operational difference between earlier and later models.

The doorlock switch on the drivers armrest operates only 3 of the doors, not the drivers side rear.

To get the mirrors to heat, put the mirror control to position "O", then turn the HRW on.

Cool, I can do that, but how do you "know" they are heating, will they feel warm?

Jon

give them a couple of minutes and they should feel warm to the touch. If ones working and one isn't you will know.

Cool, will give it a try now :)

Ok, left mirror heating ok, right mirror nothing at all.

This is bad news. The mirror motors and heater do not share a common ground, so it is likely to be the electronics in the windows motor. You are going to have to take off the door code anyway, so you may as well check the wiring first.

Just seen your post in another thread. If the red LED isn't flashing either, that just about confirms the window motor electronics.

Is it just a case of inspecting the wiring, seeing if it is connected properly, not corroded etc or will have to get a voltmeter out? :)

Further to that, and something I forgot about until I read another thread, the red door led, it worked the day I got it but hasn't worked since, connected perhaps?

Lol, crossed posting there :)

Is it worth getting or possible to get the window motor electronics from a scrap yard?

If so, what exactly am I asking for?

Thanks

Jon

You will need to get a windows motor. The electronics box is an integral part of the windows motor (you don't need the window regulator). Make sure you get the right motor. It needs to be the same type as the one you are taking out. Just three torx screws to attach the motor to the regulator.

I suggest you get a replacement door membrane, as you will have to cut it to replace the motor.

So, even though the electric windows work, I will still need new motors? And thats because the electronics are built into the motor correct?

I can probably source the motors second hand, but where is the best UK place to buy new membranes?

Cheers

Jon

Yes, that is correct. The electronics box part of the motor controls the window, door lock mechanism, mirror motors, mirror heater, flashing LED and central locking via the armrest switch.

Ok, thank you :)

Ok, well I hadn't noticed it before, but went out in car today and drivers door does not lock using console on arm rest, only the nearside doors lock using the switch on the armrest console.

So its probably safe to assume I need a new window motor. I will have to check the part numbers to see which one I need, but does anyone happen to know whether a motor from a Octavia 2 would work in my Octavia 1 ?

Would anyone know if a 2002 Octy VRs motor would work in my 1999 Octy SLXi ?

Cheers

I mean the window motors rather than the engine lol :)
