Petrol vRS suddenly found its voice

Featured Replies

I've always thought the exhaust note on the petrol vRS was a bit muted for a sporty car.

However all of a sudden mine seems to have a nice throaty roar to it between 4 and 6k.

It is standard apart from a green filter (that is actually due a clean), 18 months old and just gone past 32k miles.

Seems quicker in the same band too.

Most odd, but I like it

hopefully mine wll do the same. i did notice a difference with the filter though

Any excuse ;)

:P Have watched that vid a few times before, and yes my car sounds very similar to that.

Although is yours standard as it seems to take off well.

Is it standard?

-Yes ;)

Progressive, small, build up of exhaust deposits (carbon etc) will cause the exhaust to mellow and mature with age. :D;)

.... unless something has gone wrong like loose baffles in one of the silencers, or something; but this seems unlikely if the car is going better.

Also don't forget at this time of year, with the cold weather you engine will be pushing out a few more ponies! :D

Any excuse ;)

Opened the link, but no vid!! wot am I doin wrong?

Have seen some of your previous posts now and realise it isn't quite as Skoda intended

Funnily enough, I commented on your original exhaust thread that the noise wasn't that impressive for an aftermarket exhaust. However, I now have a better laptop with half decent speakers and it does indeed sound rather fruity lol.

Well I don't think anything is loose. Maybe it is a placebo tbh as I haven't really pushed it over a distance that much until recently. Also had it's first two tanks of Tesco99 (usually has V-Power or Total Excellium (or whatever it is called), and again maybe that has a small influence,

Either way, on a trip from Lancashire to Leicester through the hills yesterday it was awesome. Overtaking power in 3rd is quite frightening at times lol.

could result in a big influence, although it shouldn't.

:D :D :D :D i'm sure!

God, I hope my 1.8t sounds throaty with a bit of age!

However, i'm usually guilty of sticking a new full exhaust on when things go wrong. Personally, i've found Longlife to be good value if anyone's looking. It's all custom made, plus they give a lifelong warranty as long as you own the car! And it's actually the correct grade stainless steel so it doesn't go funny.

If you have pop-ups blocked you might have to hold down control (or shift) when you click on the link.

I found mine sounded a little better running on tescos 99, maybe even better with the windows down (too cold for that experiment yet!), but as you said, could be a 'all in mind' thing lol

........ windows down (too cold for that experiment yet!),......

 Softy !  Go on; dare you.:D

After clocking up a few more miles, my son remarked that the exhaust sounded better. He thought that

I had modified it :)

May I note that since filming that vid (late 2007) I have had a box removed from the exhaust and it is considerably louder ;)

chav ;)

Seeing as there are no aftermarket exhausts available for the vRS TDI, save for a full custom system costing £400 +, I've been considering simply removing the centre silencer and fitting a straight pipe; thus just having the OE rear box (retains 'stealth' looks).

Clearly there will be an increase in noise, plus with reduced back pressure there should be a bit more power 5bhp, perhaps.

Any comments or advice (except for 'chav' please).

mine sounds quite nice since i gave the exhaust tip a good clean and on a good boot sounds good too, especially stood on the road as its driven by ;)

Barnstormer, honestly, give Longlife a call and see how much they quote. I don't know, but when I was having a tweak done on my golf I asked them how much for a vRS (thought that was what i'd buy before I actually ordered an L&K) and it seemed very reasonable for a lifetime guaranteed full exhaust system. I'm sure it was cheaper than £400. Also, you get the choice of rear pipe/s and it's made from scratch so you can design it however you want.

However, I wouldn't touch Powerflow with a bargepole! There're tons of people on Club GTI - The UK's most hands-on resource for the Golf GTI and all related models who have had a nightmare with them cos they're made from cr*p quality steel which can and does tend to rust quickly. Phoned the Powerflow head office up when I was researching both companies and despite the 'lifetime guarantee' promise on the website, because my car was a G60, they wouldn't honour it because the engine produces a lot of heat.

No faith in their own product!

Sh*te! :thumbdwn:
