No Speedo & Fuel Gauge is all over the place?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, The mrs got in the car to take kids to school and noticed the speedo isnt working and also the mileage is not clocking over also.

The rev counter and temp gauge are working fine though, but the petrol gauge is up and down all the time and keeps throwing on the petrol light even though there is half a tank in.

Just wondered if this is one problem or 2 as the speedo isnt connected with the fuel gauge is it?

There are no codes coming back apart from the one thats always there "abs modual no communication) but this dosent put the abs light on.

Just wanted to ask what i can check.

Thanks again for all the help.

Justin mate that is some car you got there ................

Your forever having trouble with it !!!

I suppose your on the right website though :):)

Sorry I can't be anymore help, but if the dashpod needs fixing I know a man who does a postal repair service.

Hi Justin,

I think you have a bad ground that's causing your problems. Usually when the dashpod goes you lose the speedo and rev counter at the same time. If you follow the brown wires from the back of the dashpod these go to a ground point. This is the one I would check first.

It is also worth checking the three fuses that feed the dash pod (F10, F11, F15).

For the ABS module, it is likely to be a problem with the communications between the ECU and the ABS ECM. First check the ABS fuse (F9). Then check that you have a working ABS system - You know how :)

Thanks, The abs one is something i am not to conerned about as i do have working abs by slamming on the brakes.

I will check the fuses and other sugestions and let you know how It goes.

I bought this car and found out it had been suffering from water leaks in the roof with water going down both front A Pillars then the usual floor getting wet.

All i can think off is that there are corroded cable or cables somewhere.

Thanks again for all the help

jus had exactly same problem happen the other day how did u get on with the fuses?

Mine did a simular thing to this but all the dash lights illuminated and things went crazy for a while including speedo etc. Shortly after the alternator went and fried the fuse box on top of the battery. Looking at vw forums this is quite common when the alternator goes.

May have something to do with it and worth checking.
