Choosing suspension

Featured Replies

Was going to place my order with jabba for my RARB and suspension for the Vrs, but im still stuck on which set up to go for.

KW 1 coilovers (only height adjustable)

Weitech GT (only height adjustable)

Weitech TX (height and rebound adjustable)

Or go with Koni FSD and eibach

Ive searched and read as many posts as i could but am still baffled and cant make my mind up.

I live out in the sticks (sort of) so most of my driving is twisty country roads.

I can understand the benefit of height adjustment for both looks and lowering center of gravity. The rebound adjustment will 'stiffen' the ride but would it really be necessary? If so is it a case of drive, change setting, drive change setting etc?

Well as i understand it, the more you spend the better build and ride quality you get. So if you can afford the best then why not.

Personally unless i was going to be racing i wouldn't bother about rebound stiffness, i would just be wanting the low look, and could live with a bouncy harder ride.

I've been looking at these Awesome > AP Coilover Kit Skoda Fabia Mk1 inc VRS. Very bottom of the range for coilovers but its all i would need.

I'd agree that the rebound adjustment really isn't going to make a lot of difference to a road car unless your going to thrash it around B roads all the time. KW make Weitec as well, the main difference between the 2 is that KW kit is stainless, and therefore won't rust, and the Weitec is galvanized against rust. KW also make the AP coilovers as their budget brand and again are galvanized against corrosion but the quality of the bump stops etc is inferior to the Weitecs.

I've also spent some time deciding on what suspension set up I want and I've decided on the Weitec GT coilovers to give me the option to set the ride height as I want it, the non coilovers kits I've seen don't lower the Fabia enough for my liking.

unless you know what you're doing in terms of damping (both rebound and compression) or you're going to pay someone who does, I wouldn't worry about it too much and just go with something decent but simple (height adjustment only)

Ride quality doesn't generally increase with the cost of the suspension, if anything it can get worse!

Some of the most expensive suspension kits are designed and sold primarily for track use where you're unlikely to encounter potholes, uneven road surfaces and traffic calming measures like speed bumps so these kits are rightly developed for control over any other factor.

My Weitec GT is in the post  i ran these on my previous car (Fiesta Zetec S) and was very pleased with them. Not to stiff, but coped with the twisties well.

Just hoping for the naff weather to go so i can fit and enjoy them.

I'm very happy with the set up I have (see below). If you want it slammed then it's got to be coilovers but I chose lowering springs due to traffic calming, potholes etc. & I'm happy with the stance (see attached thumbnail). When fitting the front splitter I was quite surprised how close the sump was to the ground.

i agree with darren. i have apex springs, they are not as far down as the coilies go but it terms of ride quilty there isnt much difference. the springs tend to hand potholes and speed bumps better. when i get the money the FSD are going on. so i cant comment on the upgrade with the shocks to.

theres my 2p worth

From my understanding after speaking with kw is the spring rates between the kw and weitec are the same as are the damping. Differnce is what their made from.

Note about the rebound adjustable versions. According to their site the rears arn't ajustable.

I am running Vmaxx,, galvanised and just as good a ride quality as KW V1's ;)

Christ, you're the first person I've ever seen say that on a forum , everyone else describes the Vmaxx as total poop compared to KW's, have you ever had KW's?

My mate has a Hybrid Fabia vrs with KW V1's and theyre is next to nothing ride wise between them, the KW's are marginally stiffer but not much... I have driven mines and his

Have you had Vmaxx?

At the end of the day its a budget VAG derv.... hardly worth splashing out

Yellow - KW's

Black - Vmaxx

I've been out in mk2 Golfs with KW and Vmaxx and the Vmaxx nearly shook my fillings out, that's why I was suprised by what you'd said.

I have AP from Awesome

For the price £318 it was hardly worth paying £30 less for fixed height kits.

They are good quality and the ride is decent, a little bit bouncy over uneven roads but not as "hard" as the standard suspension

sits like this

any lower and youd have SERIOUS issues over speedbumps etc

after owning cars fitted with other coilovers(about 25 sets now) i will never buy anything but kw,i have had the lot in prices ranging from 300 quid right up to 1400 and no other coilovers will grace a car of mine, ride quality is awesome, but its when you decide to push the car to the limits you find out how good your coilovers are,at a pinch maybe i would go to the wietecs but none of the others come close.

I`v done a fair bit of digging about v-maxx and all the bods running them on golfs etc cant rate the enough! Im going for budget ones for mine when i can afford it, as a few people have said, its a cheap warm hatch, im not going to spend 1/4 of what its worth again on coilovers. However, it also depends on how your gonna use the car i guess, if you always on the track, and on the limit then fair enough, splash the cash.

Matt

Fair point mate, but if you find anyone who's changed from vmaxx to a better quality set and ask them if they'd change back, I bet I'd know the answer.

Well if i was paying the extra £££ then yeah i would expect them to be better, BUT, i think you`d need to find someone who was unhappy enough to take there vmaxx`s off first ;)

I had Weitecs on my Escort, was really impressed with them :)
