replacing tyres all in one go or "as needed"

Featured Replies

One of my tyres needs replacing fairly soon and I want to start using "better" tyres (Toyo T1-R) as I have randoms on all wheels.

I'd rather not stump up £320 for the lot to be changed in one go and would rather do one at a time when needed.

Is this a silly idea or is it better to change the front two in one go, which I assume are the most important, then the rears when needed?

I'd continue using that brand long term

best to have even wear, repalce front two at same time when needed, then same again with thew back, your rear tires will always out live the front ones, unless rear wheel drive then its opposite

How much tread is on the other 3 and what makes are they?

I'd never mix brands or wear on a corner as this will affect handling.

Best to do fronts or backs (pairs).

In pairs or all at once for me

the rear treads are fine. one is continental and one is a make i've never heard of but it cost me £65 to replace when I had a flat earlier in the year.

One front tyre, Infinity (another £65 job) is starting to get low but the other is slightly better. I do push them quite hard at times and all that torque helps to shave a few mm off.

I have VRS by the way

if u dont even no the make of the tyres and for £65 squid they seem pretty cheap, i would change all 4 or if your only going to change the 2 then put them on the back and put the two that were on the back on the front to get rid of them quicker

especially if ur pushing quite hard!

good point! I may just do that. Ta

Most fast fit places offer discounts for doing multiple tyres so I'd definitely do all at once. Cheaper than a new front end if you don't stop quickly enough to avoid an accident. Once all are done you can swap the fronts and rears regularly to even out the wear so that when the time comes you can do all four at once again.

I'd do two at a time, but it's sometimes better to put the better tyres on the rear for a handling point of view.

I have Proxy Tr1's on my Fabia vRS and they are the best tyres I have had on her yet.

Another vote for the Proxes:thumbup:

Thats a great Promo Vid by Toyo and definately sells the tyres.

Sometimes better!?! ALWAYS better, you mean! Understeer beats a spin in any game of accident scissor-paper-stone, 'cos let's face it, who want's to be going backwards when they lose control?

I too have had several sets of Proxeses, and aside from needing to keep them over-inflated to stop the shoulders wearing out in 0.00000000001 seconds flat, they were great if a bit 'stodgy' in terms of steering feedback. The Falken ZE912s I've got on now have been pretty good for the money, although they seem to have worn a little quicker than the Toyos (although they've worn evenly!), so I don't know whether they'll work out any cheaper over time. :ne_nau:

As for mix-and-match, I see plenty of cars with odd tyres, but since the roads aren't littered with accidents, I can't see them being anything like as hazardous as the old cross-ply/radial mix. But it's not something I'd like to do! Then again a set of fronts will last me less than a year, so they're never really on long enough for me to see just changing one as any kind of money-saving option...

ATS seem to have some great deals at the moment. Worth a look.

I have odd tyres on at the moment (not going to bother with what types but I have 3 different brands on the go lol) I've been looking at toyo T1R's for a while now while saving the pennies. So far I've found them for around £57 a corner plus fitting - a local garage charges £6 per corner so not a bad price for all 4. I will however be upgrading my wheels from the 16" Fabia vRS' to some nice 17" refurbished spiders in carbon and the cost for 17"s are only about a quid more!!!

Do a quick search and I'm sure you'll find a few good companies with a fair price.

As for the question of pairs all round etc I would recommend pairs at the very least. I had my rears put on the front and two part worns placed on the back with very near tread wear (even though they are two different brands) and I haven't had any problems (even with all this poor weather we've had).
