Cheap PD Oil

Featured Replies

I bought myself some of this today for an imminent 5000-mile oil change.

It's up to spec, so it must do the job.

thats not cheap mate, thats quite expensive for some halfords own stuff, im sure you could get something by Motul or Fuchs for less than that from Opie oils

Fuchs ache, now you tell me.

Well, it's still a fair bit cheaper than this stuff. And that's only for 4 litres, not 5.

EDIT: Just had a look about and the Halfords gloop is cheaper than the ones you mention.

Just bought a 5L bottle of Quantum PD oil from Skoda parts for £28. I'd prefer the Quantum over Halford's stuff to be honest...

Why is that, though?

Is the preference empirical or emotional?

Or both?

Or neither?

As garb accompanying the oil says: "Halfords 5W/40 Synthetic Diesel Oil 5L is formulated to the same protection and performance standards as the leading brands. Suitable for VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda diesel cars fitted with the ''Pumpe Duce '' PD engines requiring VW 505.01 specification oil."

Surely, then, this oil is no poor relation to the leading brands?

As long as the oil meets the required VW standard then it doesnt really matter what the brand is. When I buy oil, I buy the cheapest that meets the requirements for my PD (507.1).

I think the Halfords oil you've bought will do the job just fine. In fact i've even used the same stuff myself a couple of oil changes ago. But in answer to your question, probably emotional and empirical. Firstly I'm an emotional guy (nothing like confessions:)) but in this context I'd prefer to use the same brand of oil VAG uses throughout their range - more of a perceived quality I guess. I'm sure other branded oils will do the job equally so...

Secondly, for a long time Halfords own brand 5L PD oil has been priced between £35 and £40, whereas the 5L Quantum oil has been sub £30 for the last 8 months at my local Skoda parts.

Entirely logical, captain.

And I couldn''t agree more.

Hey, I'm an emotional guy too.

Well, an emoticon-al guy at the very least. :) See?

Kudos for the insightful and thorough response.

You sure are in touch with your inner whatever it is that us emotional types are in touch with (see, I don't think I'm quite as in touch with 'it' as you, or I'd probably be able to put a name to it).

I was at my local Skoda dealer today picking up an oil filter and asked the price of PD gloop.

It was £28 in there also, so that's where I'll be going in future.

And at £28, that's well still cheaper than the Halford's stuff at normal price.

And, and, like you say, that's what will be going in when Skoda service it.

Consider me converted.

Thanks.
