Octy VRS 1

Featured Replies

Hi

Considering changing all discs and pads myself (average mechanical skills, and done it years ago on a Ford) - sure someones done it an OCTY - any tips:rolleyes:

need a piston wind back tool for the rear pads as the caliper piston is screwed not pressed. Apart from that a straight forward job. If you are going to fit standard pads they will have a wear sensor on one on them.

you will also need some non standard tools, 18mm socket and 7mm allen key (socket type is best) for the front caliper and carrier removal.

ive just replaced front & rear pads & disc,s on my 04 octy vrs,not a dificult job if you know what your doing,if you have changed brakes before you will be fine, you need a piston wind back tool as already said for back calipers,i found the bolts holding on the rear pad carrier were very tight & were held on by a small size allen key headed bolt, make sure you use a good quality & fitting allen key bit & rachet as you dont want to damage the bolt head! only other suggestion is to push the front pistons back slowly,i used a g clamp & had the resevoir top off,i found i had to keep syphoning a bit of fluid out of the reservoir as it had been toppped up over the years as the pads wore down, didnt want brake fluid coming out of top all over car etc as you pushed the pistons back! good luck!:)

With brake discs removed dont forget to clean up the hub faces with some emery cloth or wire wheel....so the hub face looks nice and shiny would be good...Helps eliminate any possibility of the disc not sitting correctly.

Thanks for the input --- think I'm going in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also a good idea to put some copper grease on the hub face to stop corrosion, makes it easier to get the wheel off next time. Did the disks on front of SWMBO's car the other day, not good trying to tap an alloy to get it to let go of the hub!!

I read somewhere (Briskoda or Haynes) that you should slack off the bleed nipple when you push back the calipers on an ABS equipped vehicle.

I have just done all four discs on my car. Quite a simple, straightforward job.

Just checked Haynes and you are right. I never did this when I replaced my front pads  I just undid the brake fluid reserve cap and checked levels as I pushed the piston in. Hasn't had an effect on braking though and car went through it's MOT ok
