Sunstrips - Legality?

Featured Replies

I've got a plain black sunstrip I'm considering putting onto the windscreen.

Is anyone aware of any laws surrounding this? Am I likely to get pulled by the fuzz (ouch!)? Are there any other issues surrounding sunstrips?

Thought I'd check before I stick it on... am getting tired of sun in my eyes all the time... :eyecrazy:

As far as I'm aware no law exists and common sense prevails... Just take a look at the Nova boys to see what they can get away with... :D

If it's at all warm this weekend I'll slap it on. Will try and take some piccies as well.

I managed to pick up a plain black strip - rather than go for the "motorsport" ones that all the orions and escorts have around this way.

One more question: If I fit a sunstrip, does that mean I'll have to start wearing a baseball cap? :-)

yes, and take the "one hand on top of wheel" driving position, and ensure all people can hear is nnts nnts nnts nnts!

(nnts - try to say it and you'll understand!:D)

(I can say this cos I've been through it! :D)

Get that bass thumping! - and its always the case that "nnts, nnts, nnts, nnts" is better than "nnts, nnts, nnts, nnts" - I've got a pirate CD in my car called "happy hardcore" - you hardly get any space between the "nnts" on that album - something like 180-200 b.p.m. (Not my normal listening I should point out - I have no baseball cap, and only put one hand on the wheel when I'm changimg gear, (or giving a copper the finger)) :D

I think there are some legality issues - dont know exactly what.

Could be the "it mustn't be in your eyeline" or mustn't be more than nnn cm tall....

Strange you should mention it, but the ICE stuff is going into the boot this weekend if I have time - although for my benefit, not everyone else around me! Only a sub & amp combo really...

It comes down just above where my line of sight would be broken if I had the sun-visors down, but with no annoying gap between them (which the sun always seems to shine through)

Don't those kev-mobiles normally have something like "MOTORSPORT" written on their sunstrips? I guess it just a shame when you look under the bonnet of their B-reg Nova and find a 1.1 engine... :) that could be the definition of irony.. (like a nun doing pressups in a cucumber patch is the definition of suspicion)

Visible area of screen is the only thing I could think of been an issue. But that might be wiper blades...

I would suggest that vehicle construction and use regulations are a possible source for this info. I've just done a quick search but couldn't find my way quickly to what I wanted. I have a feeling that somewhere 'deep' in this site you may find what is required.

Paul

According to the DfT website, windscreens on cars registered since 1985 must transmit at least 75% of the light. Other windows must let through at least 70% of the light. See the summary halfway down this page.

You have more patience than I do! That looks like the information to answer the question.

BTW, how does that 'see what the bad guys can see' on your signature line work?

Paul

It works by using Internet Explorer (and some other browsers) to look at your own drive c:\ - it can't be used to look at someone else's drive tho :D

The Department for Transport regulations relate to light transmission through glass and are not really relevant in this case, but the MOT windscreen test schedule here is. There is enough information in the schedule to enable Stimps to work out whether or not his new sunstrip is likely to be an MOT fail item. :)

Denis

There is one obvious way around an MOT failure for a sunstrip , simply buy a new car every three years , fix the sunstrip of your choice on it on day 1 , enjoy it for 3 years then repeat the process untill you get put into an old folks home! ;)
