Which Superb?

Featured Replies

That said if you can stomach the fuel costs (and VED :eek:) then the petrol V6's are smooth, fairly quick and are at absolutely rock bottom prices.

Amusingly, the VED bands are quite quirky:

Manual:

210 215 235 2.5 V6 TDi

A pre 2006 model V6 auto is going to cost practically the same in VED as the 1.9TDi and 2.5TDi automatics :)

If he was looking at manuals, the 1.9 would be much cheaper on the VED, but the automatic box levels the playing field!

It's fitted to all Czech built B5.5s. It's also pretty useless...

Thanks to all so far: so much food for thought it took me quite a while to digest it.

I suppose the next step is to drive: first some cars then, one would hope, a bargain.

If budget forces me to buy the base model then try to retrofit bi-Xenons (on dip only – thank you, 'rotodiesel') would anyone know the likely cost of having a dealer do it?

Thank you again,

AF.

Getting a dealer to retor fit xenon's will be silly money, guestimate it yourself:

pair of new headlights c/w ballasts and bulbs

pair of headlight washers

self leveling sensor

TBH i doubt you would find a dealer wishing to undertake the job and if you did i would expect the final bill to be £2K+

or you could of course do it the completely illegal way  and fit a xenon kit into your projector headlights.

Of course this way you would not have auto levelers (just the manual ones fitted as std) and no headlamp washers - but you could do it yourself for under £100! or pay someone to fit them (a dealer wouldn't entertain it) for about £100.

I've only had my V6 for a couple of weeks, and it's been cold, snowy and wet, but I'm really pleased with the performance and the fuel economy.

On a dry, sunny day with a trip of 55 miles on a mix of traffic free dual carriageway, A and B roads, and driving along enjoying the sunshine and keeping within the speed limits, the trip averaged 53.6 mpg, which I find astounding for such a big car with a big engine.

Bull****, my 1.9 auto has at best shown 47mpg and that was 100% motorway, as it's in top gear I can't see it being any different to a manual, at a guess a V6 will do 24 urban and 39 motorway, mine is 28 urban and 45 motorway and 4 uses less than 6 even given the power to weight ratio, learn maths of admit you tolda fib, 1.3 Fabia's will stuggle to return 55mpg.

I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick Gizmo? I think he is talking about a retrofitting a Xenon Kit into the current Halogen headlamps, hence he 'dipped beam only' comment?

For me the dealer, if they have any sense wouldn't do this as it's illegal.............

Aren't all xenons on a MKI Superb's dip beam only anyway? (so not bi-xenon)

I thought all bi-xenons (dip and main beam) had to use to one bulb.

The MK1 Superb's headlamps (both Bi-Xenon and Halogen) are made by Hella and within the Bi-Xenon headlamp you will find a Bi-Xenon module (dipped and main beam), DE Foglamp and an additional Free Form Main Beam Reflector...........

On the Halogen headlamp there is a DE Halogen dipped beam module), DE Foglamp and an addtional Free Form Main Beam Relfector.........

Therefore if retro-fitting Xenon to a Halogen headlamp then you would only replace the dipped beam bulb with a bodge job retro fit xenon kit...........

So on a bi-xenon light is the halogen lens used at all - for say when you flash your headlights, come on as well as the xenon main beam or totally redundant?

Sorry mate what do you mean by Halogen lens?

On the Bi-Xenon headlamps when you activate Main Beam the Bi-Xenon module changes to provide a Main Beam pattern and the Free Form Main Beam reflector illuminates (which is halogen)..........then when you swith your Main Beam off the Bi-Xenon module changes back to provide a Dipped Beam pattern and the Free Form Main Beam reflector goes out.......

Yes i know how the bi-xenons work, but was unsure on what was actually fitted into each lamp., difficult to explain, but i will try! :o

On a drivers side UK Superb you have (going from the indicator):

1. dip beam - halogen & xenon (and bi-xenon)

2. fog light - halogen

3. main beam - halogen,

Now on a bi-xenon equipped car what use does No. 3 (above) have?

A. comes on when you put the main beam on (as well as the bi-xenon)

B. only comes on when you flash the lights (to preserve the bi-xenon's)

C.nothing at all although a bulb is there

D. nothing & no bulb is present

I hope that is a bit clearer?

I thought on the superb, the main and foglamps are the same unit, just with a blinker over them? (Hence why the fogs switch off on the dash when you go main?)

I have to agree with Superbia - my V6 TDI does at best 42 on a motorway (at a steady 60 to 70 mph) and around the town around 24 to 27.

For a Bi-Xenon lamp it is as I have explained above which in your explaination is A...................this acts as, what we call, an Auxiliary Main Beam.........

No mate, completely seperate, stand infront of the car and get someone to roll through the functions and you will see this............fogs do not switch off when you activate main beam............

Cheers, thats how i thought it would be.

Sorry if that comes across a bit venomous, I was extremely drunk when I wrote it, having been cost a fortune by someone who told me of good mpg results it's a bit of a touchy one for me and I hate to see anyone else get tripped up the same way, my example was a guy who had a Cavalier V6 2.5 petrol that did 27 mpg urban, so I bought an Omega 2.5 on the strength of it and had to endure 16mpg for 2.5 yrs, which in my game hurts.

Hmm, I shall double check this then this evening and see if I'm wrong, I was pretty sure that the fogs come through the same aperature as the mains - switching on the fogs causes the main beam reflector to light up - then the beam pattern changes with the main beam coming on.

I could be talking utter cr*p, but I'm pretty sure I've checked this before!

No as Baker said, 3 separate light lenses.

Bah, it appears one was talking out of ones behind, I retract the above statement after having had a decent look this evening!

I have no idea why I'd thought this!

However after having an investigation it appears that the beam pattern for the fogs is such that they just throw extra light under oncoming drivers field of vision, and would be virtually undetectable by police as they're so close to the normal beams... food for thought maybe.
